Google Knowledge Graph Could Change Search Forever

by karlcow

there is another frontier that might benefit from the power of Google’s Knowledge Graph: Robotics. Singhal is, admittedly, no expert, but noted that robotics, which exists at the intersection of mechanical engineers and computing, struggles when it comes to language capabilities. “I believe we are laying the foundation for how robotics would incorporate language into the future of robot-human interaction,” he said.

Endless Notebooks – Blog – BERG

by karlcow

Jack explains his notion of the service: it’s a way to preserve the contents of your notebook as an archive, whilst keeping the book in use as an ongoing tool. When you get to the second fold of scrim, you should find a note telling you it’s time to send the book off to be dismantled. This needs to be a really fast process for the service to work well – overnight, ideally; whilst your notebook is away, you won’t be able to take notes, so we need to make sure it can be returned to you as fast as you can. Fortunately, rebinding the book is a very, very quick process, especially for a skilled binder. It is, after all, just glue.

Systems with endless page bound already exists. What I would like is more a A6 or A7 inkjet printer, where I can insert page in a notebook

Möbius Ship | Indianapolis Museum of Art

by karlcow (via)

Möbius Ship also humorously refers to the mathematical concept of the Möbius Strip. Named after a nineteenth-century astronomer and mathematician, the Möbius Strip is a surface that has only one side, and exists as a continuous curve. Its simple yet complex spatial configuration presents a visual puzzle that parallels Hawkinson’s transformation of the mundane materials into something unexpected.

Batman: The Killing Joke

by alamat & 1 other (via)
“The Killing Joke” is widely considered to be the be-all-end-all of Joker stories, so what better way to pay homage to the greatest comic book villain of all time near the eve of his re-unveiling in The Dark Knight than by reviewing his definitive story? This is the comic that (sort of) revealed the origin of The Clown Prince of Crime, humanizing him to an extent never before, and truly examined -with pictures rather than words- the antagonistic symbiosis that exists between Joker and his arch nemesis, The Batman. A beloved Gotham regular will never be the same and another will be put through hell before this story is done. Oh, and there are creepy little henchmidgets as well. Gotta love the henchmidgets.

Tool : Password Strength Checker

by elaviar & 9 others
This application is designed to assess the strength of password strings. The instantaneous visual feedback provides the user a means to improve the strength of their passwords, with a hard focus on breaking the typical bad habits of faulty password formulation. Since no official weighting system exists, we created our own formulas to assess the overall strength of a given password. Please note, that this application does not utilize the typical "days-to-crack" approach for strength determination. We have found that particular system to be severely lacking and unreliable for real-world scenarios. This application is neither perfect nor foolproof, and should only be utilized as a loose guide in determining methods for improving the password creation process. Download Password Meter Package

Network Realism: William Gibson and new forms of Fiction | booktwo.org

by karlcow

Network Realism is writing that is of and about the network. It’s realism because it’s so close to our present reality. A realism that posits an increasingly 1:1 relationship between Fiction and the World. A realtime link. And it’s networked because it lives in a place that’s that’s enabled by, and only recently made possible by, our technological connectedness.

Hi James, (I guess I should put that somewhere, maybe on my Web site later today) About the article on Network Realism http://booktwo.org/notebook/network-realism/ I haven't read Gibson's book - Zero History, but I have written something about "Network Opacity" which somehow relates to the idea you are explaining. I usually do not like to use the word "Privacy", because I do not think it really exists as a binary concept. I prefer to use the concept of "Opacity" as a continuum of information permeability. More or less opaque, depending on contexts, people, distances and *time*, we will access to the information about people. The Internet network has a tendency to make the opacity super thin and that creates all issues that people/media call "Privacy". You can read about it "From Privacy To Opacity - Digital Me Management" http://www.w3.org/2010/api-privacy-ws/papers/privacy-ws-3 Let's go back to "Zero History". The value of things is motivated by a few parameters: * difficult to reproduce * difficult to access History has value because we forget. In a society, where all our memories are always accessible, identically, and even in some circumstances shared, memories has suddenly no meaning. They became part of the present. The value of remembering is (was) higher because we have a risk to forget. The opacity of time becoming thinner this risk is less important. Then the paradigm changes into something else. Maybe in our capacity to keep all these data always. We become obsess by data backups, we do not want to loose anything digital, because it becomes easier and cheaper to keep, to have access to the past at anytime. The past is part of the present. As for the future, it doesn't exist.

Adobe Forums: Character Styles/Paragraph Styles in...

by sbrothier
I was under the impression that Photoshop CS5 included new Character Style and Paragraph Style panels, but they are not listed under the Windows menu (as was displayed in a tutorial I was watching). I purchased the extended version of the Creative Suite at the Education discount... I doubt they'd remove this feature (if it exists) for students, but who knows. Anyone else know anything about this?!?

FightingArts.com - Layers Of Shu-Ha-Ri In the Practice Of Iaido

by Takwann
Like many Japanese cultural concepts, Shu-Ha-Ri packs a lot into a short phrase. Even those familiar with the concept often have trouble articulating it, as it exists in many layers. Basically, Shu-Ha-Ri is a map that lays out the potential progress of an individual involved in learning a traditional skill, whether dance, calligraphy, pottery-making, or traditional martial arts, such as iaido. Shu-Ha-Ri is progress divided into three stages. Though the stages often overlap, for convenience we will address each aspect in turn.

California is a place.

by gregg
California is loaded. From Disneyland to farmland, we’ve got Scientology and superstars, Silicon and silicone, crips and bloods. The border. Krumpin’ Clownin’ Jerkin’. The surf and the turf. The boom and the bust. California is humanity run amuck and then packaged, branded and sold. California Cuisine, California Love, California Casual, California Gold, California Girls, and of course, California Dreams. If it exists in the world, it exists here and it does so with pizzaz. Obviously, we love this stuff. That’s why we’re doing this project. Simply put, California is sensational. And the closer we look the better it gets: words and images, stories and songs, opinions and ideas. This project is ongoing. We hope you like what you see and say so. We plan to post often. So until that day, when we finally float off into the Pacific, California is a place. Stay tuned.

Understand The Web · Ben Ward

by François Hodierne & 3 others

There exists on the web a collective memory problem. It’s a famous fault in software engineers to instinctively favour reinvention over reuse, not just because they are unfamiliar with what came before, but because they misunderstand why it came before. This is a rule that is important to understand, so that it can be broken. It is not well understood, yet it is regularly broken.

Want to know if your ‘HTML application’ is part of the web? Link me into it. Not just link me to it; link me into it. Not just to the black-box frontpage. Link me to a piece of content. Show me that it can be crawled, show me that we can draw strands of silk between the resources presented in your app. That is the web: The beautiful interconnection of navigable content. If your website locks content away in a container, outside the reach of hyperlinks, you’re not building any kind of ‘web’ app. You’re doing something else.

Eyes On Brazil

by m.meixide
Eyes On Brazil exists in order to give a deeper understanding of the Brazilian arts (as well as all things Brazilian) to an English-speaking audience. Personally, I've spent almost 10 years studying (and dreaming of) the sleeping South American giant known as Brazil. Seven of those 10 years were focused teaching myself Brazilian Portuguese, and as such, I consider myself fluent. Eyes On Brazil existe para que possa dar meu próprio conhecimento sobre a cultura brasileira para não-falantes da língua portuguesa. Seu objetivo é servir de canal de expressão para as artes brasileiras além de informar o público sobre as riquezas do país.

@storm, what you describe, aka the serendipity, exists. It’s called the Web. The paper books are one technological support for a kind of writing, which evolves in novels, etc. New forms have appeared with the Web, previous forms will slowly be transformed into something we do not know about yet.

John Resig - Google Groups is Dead

by night.kame & 1 other

When you create a public group everything will go well for a couple days, at most. Without fail an onslaught of spam will start to come through your group - I've even seen it happen within the first day. It happens to every group and doesn't matter how well you advertise it (or try to hide it). After having watched Google Groups for as long as I have I can only assume that there exists no spam filtering whatsoever. Or, if there is any, it's the most grossly incompetent spam filter I've ever seen.

Adding meaning to your HTTP error pages! - Opera Developer Community

by karlcow

When searching for something on the web we’ve all had the experience of clicking on a link in a search engine’s results page only to find that the page no longer exists. If there’s no information on that page other than a default error message, the most likely course of action on the user’s part is to press the back button and try the next search result.

As site authors we can make our error pages more meaningful to our users, so that an error becomes an opportunity to bring the user back into a site and show them content that’s relevant to what they’re looking for. In this article I’ll show you how to do just that.

The Art of zen-coding: Bringing Snippets to a New Level - Monday By Noon

by greut & 1 other

The biggest calling point for zen-coding for me is its implementation of HTML selectors as snippet triggers. zen-coding includes an entirely new angle to writing markup, and it facilitates the feature by letting you write HTML based on CSS selectors

Exists for a wide range of editors, if you like snippets.

Coilhouse

by borsky & 1 other
"COILHOUSE is a love letter to alternative culture, written in an era when alternative culture no longer exists. And because it no longer exists, we take from yesterday and tomorrow, from the mainstream and from the underground, to construct our own version. We cover art, fashion, technology, music and film to create an alternative culture that we would like to live in, as opposed to the one that’s being sold or handed down to us. The result, in the form of articles, features and interviews, is laid out on our blog and in our print magazine for all to see. How to crack Microsoft Windows Vista / XP-workstations and Windows 200x servers in a minute? - June 2007

by decembre
What’s the problem? This problematic security feature exists because Windows Vista Repair Computer / System Recovery program enables the use of command prompt without any user authentication with highest possible - system-level – priviledges. Cracking Windows operating systems has been possible by using cracking software found from various web pages. This is the first time when cracking Windows operating systems is really easy and needs no deeper technical knowledge. This is the reason, why everyone using Windows should understand the cracking method and start preparing safety systems, if needed.
