Social television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by sbrothier
Social Television is a general term for technology that supports communication and social interaction in either the context of watching television, or related to TV content. It also includes the study of television-related social behavior, devices and networks. Social television systems can for example integrate voice communication, text chat, presence and context awareness, TV recommendations, ratings, or video-conferencing with the TV content either directly on the screen or by using ancillary devices. Social television is very active area of research and development that is also generating new services as TV operators and content producers are looking for new sources of revenue. While a number of existing social television systems are still at a conceptual stage, or exist as lab prototypes, beta or pilot versions are available commercially. White-labeled social TV platforms have also emerged (such as Visiware's PlayAlong, LiveHive Systems and Ex Machina's PlayToTV) which allow TV networks and operators to offer branded social TV applications. On the ratings front, companies such as SocialGuide, Bluefin Labs, Networked Insights and TrendrrTV have emerged to measure the social media activities tied to specific TV telecasts.[1] In essence, these new companies seek to serve as the Nielsen Ratings of the social televisions space.

Strategies for Public Occupation - at the Storefront for Art and Architecture | Blogs | Archinect

by karlcow

P2P (peer-to-peer) Occupation studies the propagation of a 'shadow' Wi-Fi network that circumvents official telecommunication networks to offer a safe and public internet for citizens. Such an occupation works by introducing existing software that converts existing telecommunication devices into Wi-Fi access nodes.

DAAR - Decolonizing Architecture Art Residency

by sbrothier
DAAR [Decolonizing Architecture/Art Residency] DAAR is an art and architecture collective and a residency programme based in Beit Sahour, Palestine. DAAR’s work combines discourse, spatial intervention, education, collective learning, public meetings and legal challenges. DAAR’s practice is centred on one of the most difficult dilemmas of political practice: how to act both propositionally and critically within an environment in which the political force field is so dramatically distorted. It proposes the subversion, reuse, profanation and recycling of the existing infrastructure of a colonial occupation. DAAR projects have been shown showed in various biennales and museums, among them Venice Biennale, the Bozar in Brussels, NGBK in Berlin, the Istanbul Biennial, The Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, Home Works in Beirut, Architekturforum Tirol in Innsbruk, the Tate in London, the Oslo Triennial, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and many other places. DAAR’s members have taught lectured and published internationally. In 2010 DAAR was awarded the Price Claus Prize for Architecture, received Art initiative Grant, and shortlisted for the Chrnikov Prize.

Media Types in RESTful HTTP - Stefan Tilkov's Random Stuff

by karlcow

One final approach that I find very interesting was mentioned by Jan Algermissen a while ago: If your format is based on an existing one, e.g. HTML or XML, your server can actually send the same content with different MIME types, depending on the client’s capabilities. A client that only included application/json in its Accept header would then get the content labeled application/json, while one that includes the specific MIME type application/vnd.whatever would get the same content with this label applied.

Monitoring Israeli Colonization Activities

by sbrothier
Monitoring Israeli Colonizing activities in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza is a joint project between the Applied Research Institute in Jerusalem (ARIJ) and the Land Research Center (LRC). The project, funded by the European Union, aims at inspecting and scrutinizing Israeli colonizing activities in their different forms in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza, and to disseminate the related information to policy makers in the European countries and to the general public. Specifically, the project will be providing accurate updates on the expansion of existing Israeli colonies, associated by-pass roads and land confiscation. It will also provide detailed baseline data related to specific sites where new Israeli colonizing activities are planned or initiated. Methods used to collect data and monitor the colonizing activities will include remote sensing satellite images, field work, aerial photographs, colonies' masterplans, and topographic maps.

Concurrence — Concurrence Framework v0.3.1 documentation

by jpcaruana
Concurrence is a framework for creating massively concurrent network applications in Python. It takes a Lightweight-tasks-with-message-passing approach to concurrency. The goal of Concurrence is to provide an easier programming model for writing high performance network applications than existing solutions (Multi-threading, Twisted, asyncore etc). Concurrence uses Lightweight tasks in combination with libevent to expose a high-level synchronous API to low-level asynchronous IO.

Vendor Prefixes Are Hurting the Web

by Monique & 1 other

I think vendor prefixes are hurting the Web. They are hurting Web authors. They are hurting users of browsers. They are hurting competition in the Web browser space. I think we (people developing browsers and Web standards) should stop hurting the Web. It would also make sense for browsers to implement other browsers’ prefixed features to the extent existing content uses prefixed features.

Inside Pantheon: the Valhalla filesystem | Pantheon

by holyver
At Pantheon, when we look at challenges Drupal projects face, we don't only do what's worked well-enough in existing deployments. We ask ourselves how we can transcend some of the challenges entirely. How Drupal stores files is no exception. So, when we started building the next generation of Pantheon (now launched), we looked at our options -- and then built a solution entirely focused on the needs of Drupal developers.

You can call this nitpicking, but this stuff matters! This is supposed to be a canonical representation of human relationships. But it only takes five minutes of reading the existing standards to see that they're completely inadequate.

Daring Fireball Linked List: AppleInsider: 'Apple Reportedly Questioning Future of Mac Pro'

by night.kame

AppleInsider:

Although the Mac maker has reportedly developed a revision to the existing Mac Pro that may or may not see the light of day, people familiar with the matter said management as far back as May of 2011 were in limbo over whether to pour any additional resources into the product line.

You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

HTML5 Rocks - "Mobifying" Your HTML5 Site

by oseres
reating a mobile-friendly html5rocks.com As an exercise I thought it would be interesting to take html5rocks (an existing HTML5 site) and augment it with a mobile-friendly version. I was mainly concerned with the minimum amount of work required to target smart phones. The goal of my exercise was not to create an entirely new mobile site and maintain two codebases. That would have taken forever and have been a huge waste of time. We had already defined the site's structure (markup). We had a look and feel (CSS). The core functionality (JS) was there. Point is, many sites are in this same boat.

HOWTO: Implement Facebook Connect on WordPress (in reality) « Dented Reality

by mozkart & 1 other (via)
Before I rolled my own solution, I took a good look at a few of the existing WordPress options including: The WP-FBConnect plugin, made by Facebook, Another WordPress plugin made by Sociable, and The Community Facebook Connect Plugin, by Jesse Stay None of these worked quite how Morgan and I had discussed, so I decided to make my own, lightweight solution. Before editing any actual theme files, there’s some prep-work to be done, so: #
