Men and pigs, united by a game. | AMUSEMENT.NET

by sbrothier
A new game, Pig Chase, will soon let you have a play date with a pig. Following a European legislation, farmers have to provide pigs with entertainment to prevent them from being bored or violent. A team from the Utrecht School of the Arts and Wageningen University came up with a solution: a tablet game where humans and pigs play together towards the same objective. The human controls a ball of light on his touchscreen. The pig has to do the same thing with his snout on the screen of his pen. If they succeed to bring the ball to the goal an explosion of lights bring joy and happiness to the pigpen. And a great satisfaction for the human: he’s going to eat a peaceful meat.

Monitoring Israeli Colonization Activities

by sbrothier
Monitoring Israeli Colonizing activities in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza is a joint project between the Applied Research Institute in Jerusalem (ARIJ) and the Land Research Center (LRC). The project, funded by the European Union, aims at inspecting and scrutinizing Israeli colonizing activities in their different forms in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza, and to disseminate the related information to policy makers in the European countries and to the general public. Specifically, the project will be providing accurate updates on the expansion of existing Israeli colonies, associated by-pass roads and land confiscation. It will also provide detailed baseline data related to specific sites where new Israeli colonizing activities are planned or initiated. Methods used to collect data and monitor the colonizing activities will include remote sensing satellite images, field work, aerial photographs, colonies' masterplans, and topographic maps.

Lunch with the FT: Mitsuko Uchida - FT.com

by karlcow

And the vulgarity? “Have you never visited a Japanese household? The traditional image is of clear-cut lines, everything so simple, nothing to be seen except the tatami mat. Today, every tiny Japanese apartment is crammed with a mishmash of souvenirs, east European embroidery, a candle from Greece, a German plate, a good-luck cat with one hand up – superstitious things you can buy at a temple. There’s an obsession with labels but no judgment of what constitutes vulgarity. People are more affluent. There’s a lack of confidence about tradition because the Japanese are still enthralled with western culture. But when I look at [the classical music boom in] China, Japan and Korea, the only country where they seem to be genuinely music-loving is Korea.”

Heuuu? C'est partout la même chose. La différence est qu'elle est expatriée.

Occupy Wall Street: where are the migrants? | openDemocracy

by karlcow

As a first-generation migrant in the United States, the demographics of the Occupy Wall Street Protest intrigues me just enough to notice that there are no conspicuous migrant populations protesting. Where in the so-called masses representing the 99% of America are the East-Asians and South-Asians from Asia? The West-African women from Africa or the Eastern-European men from Europe? This to me is a primary indicator of how heterogeneous the Occupy Wall Street campaign is in a locale as glaringly diverse as New York City in a nation built at the hands of migrant labour.

European public bodies produce thousands upon thousands of datasets every year - about everything from how our tax money is spent to the quality of the air we breathe. We are challenging designers, developers, journalists, researchers and others to people to come up with something useful, valuable or interesting for European citizens, built using open data.

Fuck Yeah Commuting — The Pop-Up City

by karlcow

Type in any zip code and see where people are commuting to/from and how much time they spend commuting. The interactive maps provide interesting information, however, the service does not work yet for European zip codes.
