The Death of the Fringe Suburb - NYTimes.com

Japan Blocks the Young, Stifling the Economy - NYTimes.com

by karlcow

The result is that young Japanese are fleeing the program in droves: half of workers below the age of 35 now fail to make their legally mandated payments, even though that means they must face the future with no pension at all. “In France, the young people take to the streets,” Mr. Takahashi said. “In Japan, they just don’t pay.”

The Adventures of Unemployed Man book

by gregg
“Unemployed Man,” written by Erich Origen and Gan Golan, and illustrated by a legion of artists, is a satirical look at politics, the economy and superheroes — though not necessarily in that order. One of the highlights is a parody of the origin of the Incredible Hulk: David Tanner is bombarded with Fox News rays and transforms into White Rage.

Undesired by Walter Astrada on MediaStorm

India is a diverse country, separated by class and ethnicity. But all women confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. This preference cuts through every social divide, from geography to economy. No woman is exempt. This preference originates from the belief that men make money while women, because of their expensive dowry costs, are a financial burden. As a result, there is a near constant disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until old age, women face a constant threat of violence and too frequently, death.

“for the lolz”: 4chan is hacking the attention economy

by alphoenix
Amidst all of this, 4chan has “popped.” Journalists and academics are clamoring to discuss and analyze 4chan. At first, it was all about discussing whether or not this community of 9.5 million mostly young mostly male internet people was evil or brilliant. Lately, the obsession focuses on anonymity, signaling that Chris’ TED talk set the frame for public discourse about 4chan. Both of these are certainly interesting topics. 4chan has created some of the most lovable memes on the internet but /b/tards have also been some of the most nefarious trolls and griefers on the web.

Japan (signed) by Kubota, Hiroji : store.magnumphotos.com

by sbrothier
Modern Japan, the second largest economy in the world, is a land of contradictions. Home to some of the most sophisticated technology and manufacturing, it also has communities whose daily life has changed little in the last five hundred years. It is a land of great beauty, both in the landscape and in its celebrations, festivals, and traditional arts.
