Designing for the Retina Display (326ppi)

by rvuong & 3 others

For three generations of the iPhone, Apple kept the screen consistent (320x480 pixels and 3.5 inches diagonal). But now Apple's new iPhone 4 boasts the "highest resolution phone screen ever (960x640 pixels, 3.5 inches diagonal, & an 800:1 contrast ratio)." What's the impact to designers?

Limited Edition Rickshaw - Anthropologie.com

by karlcow

We're sorry. This product is no longer available. DETAILS While on a trip to India, some of our team flagged down a rickshaw for a spur-of-the-moment tour of the town. Inspired by the ride and feeling a bit whimsical, we decided to design our own set of wheels, with some very special touches like a collapsible kantha-fabric canopy, handlebar streamers, a bell for brrring-bringing on the bike path and even a headlight that illuminates when the pedals are cranked. An instant conversation starter on the road or on display, we'll bet you're whisked away on the adventure of a lifetime once you hop on - or into - our quixotic carriage. No two are exactly alike.

Lynx would not be impressed – on semantics and HTML | Christian Heilmann

by karlcow & 1 other

Semantics are like wonderful prose. You use them to deliver an enjoyable product. People are not celebrated for writing books. They are celebrated for what they filled them with. If we keep putting things on the web that have structure and get better on more sophisticated display products we are building for the future. If we point fingers at others doing it wrong we waste our time.

PixelPhones – a huge display made with smartphones | Seb Lee-Delisle

by karlcow

The tricky bit was figuring out where the phones are – GPS just isn’t accurate enough. I was inspired by the Junkyard Jumbotron – it puts markers on each phone, then you take a picture of them all. But in my app a marker would be way too small so instead I use a unique sequence of flashes.

Why install time permissions suck. Why we wanted access to contacts in the Walmart app on Dion Almaer's Blog

by night.kame

Interestingly, on webOS, things are the other way around – any app can display the “People Picker” allowing the user to select a single contact to pass to the app, but there’s no way for an app to gain permission to read all contacts.

WebOS plus avancé qu'Android.

AnandTech - The Apple Thunderbolt Display Review

by night.kame

Ever since I moved to a notebook as my main work computer I've become increasingly annoyed with the process of actually moving my notebook-as-a-desktop around. At my desk I've got DisplayPort, Ethernet, two USB, FireWire 800, speakers and power all plugged into a 15-inch MacBook Pro. What makes it frustrating isn't the first-world-problem of having to unplug seven cables, rather that it doesn't need to be seven cables - Apple could make the whole thing happen with just two.

Dans le monde des PC, ça fait 20 ans que ce problème est résolu, sans fil. Chez Apple, ils se trainent toujours avec ces fils à la patte.

Kindle Specific Map Style

by karlcow

One of the great things about Open Data and OpenStreetMap is that you can control what the map looks like. You are not limited to just what the data looks like and you can customise it yourself. I have made a custom Mapnik style file that's optimized for Amazon Kindle display.
