polis: Moving On Up? Outdoor Escalators in Urban Environments

by karlcow

In Comuna 13 of Medellin, Colombia's largest city, a recently built 1,260-foot long escalator snakes across the hillside shantytown in six separate divisions. As part of the neighborhood's larger urban regeneration project, this massive outdoor escalator cuts down the time to traverse Comuna 13, reportedly one of Medellin's poorest and most violent neighborhoods, from 35 minutes to six minutes on foot.

YouTube - Devil's Hill Protest Music Video

by karlcow

Lachine residents and friends sing out a protest song to Montreal Westers to help them understand the dangers they are imposing on neighboring families. The battle over a Devil's Hill street -- officially known as Broughton Road in Montreal West and as Des Érables in Lachine -- has raged for almost two decades. But on October 5, 2010, Montreal West erected a raised platform topped by bollards, cutting off emergency evacuation route for the hundreds of people living on the opposite side of the street in Lachine. SIM (Montreal's Fire Services) and the SVPM (Montreal police have publicly stated their opposition to the structure : it slows ambulance and fire services, endangers firefighters and their equipment and cuts off one of only two emergency evacuation routes for residents living near freight train lines. A 2002 independant study found no usual high traffic on the street and recommended against closing it off. Lachine residents appeal to Montreal Westers to "Take the barricade down!"Song composed by Pat Schmidt, ©2010

Aiki-Talk #2: Misogi

by Takwann
DON: We often begin the year or even each quarter with what I have called a kind of misogi ritual, involving a number of bokken cuts. Perhaps it would be useful to talk about what that term refers to.

Undesired by Walter Astrada on MediaStorm

by gregg
India is a diverse country, separated by class and ethnicity. But all women confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. This preference cuts through every social divide, from geography to economy. No woman is exempt. This preference originates from the belief that men make money while women, because of their expensive dowry costs, are a financial burden. As a result, there is a near constant disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until old age, women face a constant threat of violence and too frequently, death.

Sword tip movement - AikiWeb Aikido Forums

by Takwann
I've become obsessed with my sword cuts as of late. One thing has been driving me nuts for well over a year. When I swing my sword, watching my cuts in a mirror, I just can't seem to get the tip of the sword to go straight. It moves, ever so slightly, side to side as it goes down. It's super minor, but I can't stop thinking about it, which is probably making it worse! What I tend to do is stare at my own eyes in the mirror and try and swing the sword to pass between my eyes in the mirror. I think I'd equate it to shooting a rifle or a bow and arrow and having the shakes. Has anyone else experienced this and been able to steady yourself?

A Book Apart, Home

by sbrothier
HTML5 is the longest HTML specification ever written. It is also the most powerful, and in some ways, the most confusing. What do accessible, content-focused standards-based web designers and front-end developers need to know? And how can we harness the power of HTML5 in today’s browsers? In this brilliant and entertaining user’s guide, Jeremy Keith cuts to the chase, with crisp, clear, practical examples, and his patented twinkle and charm.

Interest Rate Cuts All Round?

by polyxena
Thursday will have a similar deal - the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England announce their interest rates. The ECB is forecast - only forecast - to keep things the same, resisting any pressure to cut - which the larger members of the EU, France, Germany, would prefer - but others, Portugal, for example are dead against it.

Honk-kong/JP cinema vs american cinema

by karlcow

"Classic Hong Kong and Japanese action scenes were 'expressionistic' in the sense that their larger-than-life balletics and aerobatics amplified recognizable (if extreme) possibilities of the human body," writes David Bordwell. "The result was a carnal cinema, in which shooting and cutting aimed to enlarge and prolong graceful movement. By contrast, Hollywood action scenes became 'impressionistic,' rendering a combat or pursuit as a blurred confusion. We got a flurry of cuts calibrated not in relation to each other or to the action but suggesting in their flurry a vast busyness. Here camerawork and editing didn't serve the specificity of the action but overwhelmed, even buried it."

make it known: Worldly Reading/Watching

by srcmax (via)
My research led me to 'Gaza Sderot - Life In Spite of Everything', a web-documentary by a French company. It follows the lives of men, women and children in two cities on the Israeli Palestinian border. Every day since October 26, 2008, two 2minuted videos are uploaded, one from each side. They are viewed side by side, giving a truly real look at the daily lives of these people. Despite the many dangers (air bombings and rocket attacks, power cuts and lack of food or medicine) the people never stop working, loving, and dreaming. It's been really amazing to get to know the people and follow their lives, and contrast them with how good we have it here in Canada. It's all very inspiring, and makes me want to do something.

Now Flickr is hit by Yahoo layoffs | Technology | guardian.co.uk

by karlcow

that George Oates, a high-profile member of the Flickr team and one of the site's early employees, was told that she was being given the chop too. She's recently been in Australia, so the fact that her bad news has arrived a day late could just be a quirk of travelling - but I'm trying to find out if other members of the Flickr team are also being laid off as well. (Update: I'm told two other members of the Flickr team also got laid off.) Oates - who designed Flickr's interface - is highly-regarded, confirming that this round of job cuts is basically arbitrary - but it also marks a bit of a watershed for Yahoo.

Instantly Locate Yourself on Google Maps

by decembre
Instantly Locate Yourself on Google Maps Firefox with Greasemonkey (All platforms): The Google Maps & Geode Greasemonkey user script adds a small Current Position link next to the Google Maps search box that instantly locates you on a map using Firefox's new geolocation technology. To use this script right now, you'll need to install the previously mentioned Geode Firefox extension—but as soon as Greasemonkey supports Firefox 3.1, which itself supports geolocation natively, you won't need any extra extensions. Since so many Google Maps searches start at your current location, whether you're getting directions or looking for nearby businesses, this quick link cuts out the work of entering in your address each time. Handy!
