According to the US Department of Energy (Energy Information Administration), the world consumption of energy in all of its forms (barrels of petroleum, cubic meters of natural gas, watts of hydro power, etc.) is projected to reach 678 quadrillion Btu (or 7.15 exajoules) by 2030 – a 44% increase over 2008 levels (levels for 1980 were 283 quadrillion Btu and we stand at around 500 quadrillion Btu today).

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | China earthquake toll jumps again

by karlcow

Meanwhile, concern is growing over a number of new lakes formed by the force of the earthquake. Thirty-four lakes were created in the province when landslides blocked rivers, Xinhua news agency said. Eight held more than 3 million cubic metres of water and one lake, less than 3km (two miles) from Beichuan town, had doubled in size in four days. Officials are monitoring the lakes and have sent experts to assess them, the agency said. Forecasters predict heavy rain in the region next week, which could further raise the water levels in the lakes.

CubicConverter

by rmaltete & 1 other
CubicConverter converts various types of panoramic images into and out of cubic format QuickTime VR movies. It allows simple conversion of VR media with a drop and a click. The movies and images it creates can then be placed on web pages, incorporated into larger QuickTime projects such as multinode movies, or transferred to authoring environments such as Macromedia Director for complete interactive tours. CubicConverter offers the ability to convert equirectangular, cylindrical, cubic and mirrorball images to cubic format QuickTime VR movies, or convert "back from" existing movies to source equirectangular images and cube faces for use in PTViewer Java applets or Shockwave 3D panoramas.

FS 2006-3031: Assessment of Undiscovered Petroleum Resources of Northern Afghanistan, 2006

by misskitty4280
A new assessment of the rocks of Afghanistan documents much larger petroleum resources than previously thought. The U.S. Geological Survey looked strictly at the geology, without doing any drilling, to estimate that the Afghan-Tajik Basin holds 18 times the amount of oil (over 1.5 billion barrels) and the Amu Darya Basin has several times as much gas (almost 16 trillion cubic feet) as older estimates. This could be a shot in the arm for that precarious country if oil companies can be tempted to drill there.

Activists Want Olympic Flame Turned Down

by jasontromm
The Olympic flame continued burning at full force Thursday as organizers ignored a request from environmentalists that it be turned down in honor of the first anniversary of a key global warming treaty. The cauldron, which is nearly 200 feet high, consumes 1,500 cubic meters of natural gas per hour. Organizers said the flame could go out if they reduce the gas flow.
