Where Have All the Photojournalists Gone? - Technology - GOOD

by karlcow

"Using a phone has brought my attention less to the craft and more to what I am photographing and why. So, the question becomes not where I see the phone taking my work, but where the work will take me."

The Good Enough and the priorities of values.

Multilingual User Generated Content and SEO « Code as Craft

karl says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. December 2, 2011 at 2:51 pm There is a missing opportunity from both monolingual search engines and content providers. It’s kind of sad. The fact to have one unique URI that a French user can just paste to his Japanese friend is one wonderful thing of content negotiation. How do we leverage this, so search engines are able to understand it? Enter the never used 1998 RFC: “Transparent Content Negotiation in HTTP” (RFC 2295). http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2295 I wonder what it would take for Google to negotiate with content providers and offering this feature. The solution is super simple. We were living in a world where sites were quite monolingual but this has changed since.

Style versus design, by Jeffrey Zeldman

by Spone
Many young web designers view their craft the way I used to view pop culture. It's cool or it's crap. They mistake Style for Design, when the two things are not the same at all.

An enormous last day of life. “Jonathan Safran Foer, deftly deploys sculptural means to craft a truly compelling story. In our world of screens, he welds narrative, materiality, and our reading experience into a book that remembers that it actually has a body.” –Olafur Eliasson

matt sharkey photography

by karlcow & 1 other

for as long as i can remember i've been a keeper of mementos. shoe boxes full. letters, albums, torn pieces of cocktail napkins, photographs. the latter being amongst the most important. its how i recall the moments, the days, in which they were captured. its how i piece my life together. i don't love photography for the craft or the science...i love it because it allows me to capture the human experience as it unfolds. come as you are...

summer goals

by blackgoldfish
here are some of my summer goals: 1. bake two loaves of whole grain banana bread: one to give away and one for me. 2. plan our wedding ceremony. 3. send snail mail. 4. clean out my closet. 5. practice yoga daily. 6. learn yoga anatomy and finish this book. 7. read my borrowed book about new zealand wines. 8. make a breakfast smoothie every day. 9. explore new parts of boston and take pictures. 10. watch this movie. 11. blog from simon's coffee shop (yes, there is a cafe called that!) 12. make mixed cd's for our long drives around new zealand. now tell me, what are your summer goals? are you working on any craft projects or do you have new recipes you want to try? :)

Spoonflower: Print custom fabric on-demand

by sbrothier & 2 others
Spoonflower makes it possible for individuals to design, print and sell their own fabric designs. It was founded in May 2008 by two Internet geeks who had crafty wives but who knew nothing about textiles. The company came about because Stephen’s wife, Kim, persuaded him that being able to print her own fabric for curtains was a really cool idea. She wasn’t alone. The Spoonflower community now numbers around 70,000 individuals who use their own fabric to make curtains, quilts, clothes, bags, furniture, dolls, pillows, framed artwork, costumes, banners and much, much more. The Spoonflower marketplace offers the largest collection of independent fabric designers in the world. The site has appeared in the New York Times, Associated Press, Vogue, Martha Stewart Weddings, Make, CRAFT, ApartmentTherapy, Photojojo, and many other terrific publications and blogs.

The Difference Between Art and Design | Webdesigner Depot

by ghis (via)
"The subject of what separates art and design is convoluted and has been debated for a long time. Artists and designers both create visual compositions using a shared knowledge base, but their reasons for doing so are entirely different. Some designers consider themselves artists, but few artists consider themselves designers." So what exactly is the difference between art and design? In this post, we’ll examine and compare some of the core principles of each craft.
