Adequately Good - JavaScript Module Pattern: In-Depth - by Ben Cherry

by jpcaruana & 1 other (via)
The module pattern is a common JavaScript coding pattern. It's generally well understood, but there are a number of advanced uses that have not gotten a lot of attention. In this article, I'll review the basics and cover some truly remarkable advanced topics, including one which I think is original.

Banksy's New Pixelated Sculpture: Cardinal Sin - My Modern Metropolis

by karlcow

Oh, the Catholic church won't be happy about this. Banksy just unveiled a brand new sculpture called Cardinal Sin which is a 18-century stone bust of a priest with its face sawn off and replaced by blank "pixelated" bathroom tiles. It was created as a response to the child abuse scandal in the Catholic church and its subsequent cover-up.

IM2GPS: estimating geographic information from a single image

by karlcow

Estimating geographic information from an image is an excellent, difficult high-level computer vision problem whose time has come. The emergence of vast amounts of geographically-calibrated image data is a great reason for computer vision to start looking globally — on the scale of the entire planet! In this paper, we propose a simple algorithm for estimating a distribution over geographic locations from a single image using a purely data-driven scene matching approach. For this task, we will leverage a dataset of over 6 million GPS-tagged images from the Internet. We represent the estimated image location as a probability distribution over the Earth's surface. We quantitatively evaluate our approach in several geolocation tasks and demonstrate encouraging performance (up to 30 times better than chance). We show that geolocation estimates can provide the basis for numerous other image understanding tasks such as population density estimation, land cover estimation or urban/rural classification.

Family ties earn this Smart Cover knock-off a Samsung certification and a place on their store shelves

by alamat & 1 other (via)
Apple is suing “the copyist” Samsung because they “imitate the appearance of Apple’s products to capitalize on Apple’s success”. Be that as it may, the similarities between the two tech giant’s gadgets are nothing compared to what other Asian knockoffs are doing for a living. Like Anymode Corp., which is in the business of designing, manufacturing and selling a blatant Smart Cover rip-off, pictured above and below.

Introducing: Evernote Peek, The First iPad Smart Cover App « Evernote Blogcast

by sbrothier
Several months ago, Phil and I were sitting in a plane playing around with the just-released iPad 2. Of all its features, the thing that floored us was the ingenious Smart Cover. It didn’t seem like an accessory so much as an extension of the device. As we sat there opening and closing the cover, a question struck us: could we use the cover to control an app that would make Evernote even more useful?

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne

by alamat & 1 other (via)
Grant Morrison is the most frustrating comic book writer I have ever read. On the one hand he is CLEARLY capable of writing some of the most fabulous stories ever. Problem is he is also capable of producing some unholy messes but with the way the professional reviewers have gushed over The Return of Bruce Wayne it surely falls in the category of Morrison’s masterpieces. “Ain’t it Cool News” is quoted on the back cover saying, “If you don’t pick up this book, you hate comics”. Um, ok. If you haven’t figured it out by now I was not bowled over by The Return of Bruce Wayne.

Helvetimail - josef richter

by sbrothier
Maintaining Helvetimail is not easy, because Google's CSS is a mess and keeps changing. It demands more time than I am able to regularly devote. I've never meant to make Helvetimal a paid upgrade. But now I would like to kindly ask you for even a tiny donation, so that I can spend a few more hours/days on Helvetimal, fix what's still unfixed, maybe prepare an iPad version, etc. Please note this is not to make me rich, but just to cover at least a part of the time cost needed to maintain Helvetimal. The economic downturn makes me do more work for less money, so spare time for hobbies like Helvetimail is scarce. Thank you very much!
