Android App Turns Smartphones Into Mobile Hacking Machines - Forbes

by karlcow

Anti, a free app with a $10 corporate upgrade, will offer a wi-fi-scanning tool for finding open networks and showing all potential target devices on those networks, as well as traceroute software that can reveal the IP addresses of faraway servers. When a target is identified, the app offers up a simple menu with commands like “Man-In-The-Middle” to eavesdrop on local devices, or even “Attack”; The app is designed to run exploits collected in platforms like Metasploit or ExploitDB, using vulnerabilities in out-of-date software to compromise targets.

Thoughts: On Agile Project Estimating and Pricing | Chris Blunt

by oseres
The usual approach to pricing service work is the hourly rate – a simple model that is easily understood, and translates well across different disciplines and businesses. Service work often has so many variables that an hourly rate seems to offer a good compromise between a fixed-price quote, and ensuring the supplier has flexibility to charge for unknown future work.

Moleskine launching iPhone and iPad cases: how would Hemingway play Angry Birds? -- Engadget

by sbrothier
The way we saw it, it was Moleskine vs. the inevitable march of 1s and 0s that would eventually consume us all. No longer (actually, Moleskine already sells a Kindle cover, but we're temporarily ignoring that for argument's sake). Moleskine just announced a Digital Covers line of hybrid notebooks that include a pad of regular, "legendary" notebook paper alongside a cozy spot for your i-device of choice. Will this combination (some might say compromise) make you smarter, your prose more concise, your beard more intellectual? Of course it will. But at what cost? Sure, literature survived the decline of penmanship with the emergence of Mark Twain and his typewriter, and Douglas Adams championed the Macintosh to no end, but now that Moleskine has gone and sullied its own reputation we're finally ready to just go ahead and say it: the novel is dead.

When someone says ideology, I often, think « church » and all its derivatives : zealots, blasphemy, etc. An healthy ecosystem has diversity is hackable and makes it possible to have different outcomes.

1. Prehistory: « Open » being a kind of underground culture for a very long time became finally famous. Circumstances of the society, new priorities, new generation of people (geeks) helped to achieve that.

2. The age of iron: For anything which is successful at a macro level in the society come the second generation of people who want benefits of it. First they are the initial « believers » who were living from another activity and wants to live accordingly with their beliefs. It is the first shock and the first softener of the ideology. They have to make compromise with the other markets of the ecosystem. It’s when we start to hear *pragmatic* discourses. Few of them will be successful and then will start bending some rules.

3. The age of industrial revolution: The ecosystem of is here and there are a lot of secondary activities and people. Some people who were not believers but who were just mere employees of the believers. This includes marketers, businessmen, business angels, etc. They want to make a living, they want to invest into it. A lot of tools are available and people using them don’t even know they are the byproduct of this original philosophy. Some people think we have to be careful and keep a minimum of the principles and they organize control organizations (certification, labelling, etc.). It can even reach the legal and political framework of the society.

4. The age of financial market: The original philosophy is gone, the system remains. Some of the original believers think it is a big success for the philosophy. Some getting older became a lot more flexible than when they were young. Some are angry (sometimes very angry) because the principles have been forgotten. They will fork, restart a small group (prehistory) or go on a deserted island and exclude themselves with broken flowers in their dreams.

This happens in many many social groups. Look at organic culture for example, or certain think tanks. It all depends on which levels you want to be, which matters to you. Global or local.

Decisions vs. Choices

The difference between choices and decisions is subtle , some of it has to do with the quality of your ingredients and some of it has to do with compromise at the wrong stage of development. Is the process all that matters? A process that is used to constantly create new possible options and choose from those instead of making Frankenstein out of the options given? The design process will constantly emphasize the goal in the iteration of options leading to a choice. I don’t think that definition clear, but it’s the best we came up with.

Zimbra on a VPS: Tuning - Misc - Rob Thompson

by camel
Out of the box, Zimbra is tuned for a fairly beefy machine. Zimbra will easily consume 1.5GB of ram with default settings. Some of these changes mean turning off a few Zimbra features and there are quite a few ways to do this, so you will need to evaluate memory usage given your own situation. If you simply can't live without *all* the Zimbra features or intend to support a larger (> 15) number of users, my only suggestion is to get more ram ;). But if you are willing to make some compromises, please read on. The changes below are ones that I found to be a reasonable compromise. With a few easy changes, you can bring the memory consumption way down, so that it will hum along just fine on a server with ~512MB of ram. Of course this reduces the amount of users that your server can support, but I've found that for a small installation of around 15 users, these settings will work just fine and give you the same performance as the out-of-the-box config with gobs of RAM. The server I have been testing with has 560MB of ram, and after tuning consumes all the ram and only about 80MB of swap on average. You will find that if you don't make changes similar to the ones suggested below with ~512MB of ram, your Zimbra install will slowly creep up its consumption of swap and your Zimbra install will start to crawl. Also, > 512MB seems to be about the minimum amount of ram to get a useful/zippy server

I’m a Linkin Park Fan

by Madhu
Linkin Park is a truly unique band. They are not just Rock, Rap, or Electronica band. They compromise of a veritable mixture of different styles and stylists in music, this makes them a hybrid in the type of music they play and their fan-base too. I am true lover of Linkin Park Linkin Park’s origin began in 1996 when rapper guitarist Brad Delson and the in famouis Mike Shinoda started a band called Xero. Other members of the band were Mark Wakefield the vocalist, Joseph Hahn the DJ, Rob Bourdon the drummer, and “Phoenix” Farrell the bassist. Xero made a four track demo tape including: Fuse, Stick N’ Move, Rhinestone, and Reading My Eyes.

by rmaltete (via)
Best picture quality with 6 megapixels! The best compromise for a compact camera is a sensor with 6 million pixels or better a sensor with a pixel size of >3µm . A digital camera with 12 million pixels is better than one with 6 million. ‘That is correct’ is what you would say probably because you’ve always heard more pixels are better. It’s not true(!!!), we have to say when it comes to compact cameras. We, the staff of Image Engineering, an independent testing laboratory that, amongst other things, tests digital camera for the German magazines Color Photo and c’t. Quite a while ago we noticed that image quality of digital cameras gets worse instead of better. The reason is that todays sensors are devided into more and therefore smaller pixels. We want to clarify the consequences on this website. The reason we bring this up is the vicious circle we are in and have to break out of. Most people heard that a lot of pixels make a good camera hence they buy cameras with the most pixels. Therefore the manufacturers produce cameras with more and more pixels so that they sell better. But this does not improve the quality of the pictures. This website is our little contribution for clarification and will hopefully get noticed by the public and the manufacturers.

[SUMMARY: The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace, says that homosexuality is immoral. He later modified that statement by saying he should have said only that he supports the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. That policy, a compromise, should never have been enacted; it’s now time to repeal it and permit gays to serve openly in the military.]
