Wikipedia Map Interface

by karlcow

The dynamic map is completely created in your browser. This has the advantage that the map is interactive, you can zoom into it, change colors, and see for every point what article it is and link to it. But it has the major disadvantage that it requires some heavy resources. This link may crash your browser. Use a reasonably fast machine, a current version of Chrome, and be patient while loading the data — your browser is loading more than 50 MB of data and processing it via JavaScript into an HTML5 Canvas.

A Guide To Improve Your Website's Readability Through Colors

by Monique

Colors have a huge effect on readability. This is why you need to choose them wisely so that they not only create esthetically pleasing combinations but also make it easier for users to read the text. Text is an integral part of any site and we shouldn’t punish visitors for coming to our site by using hard to read color combinations.

Dissecting the New Vogue.com: How One Magazine Did the Web Right

by sbrothier & 1 other
Vogue is one of the biggest, glossiest names in magazine publishing, and it’s just given its website a huge facelift. The site has grown exponentially in glamor and functionality with its latest iteration. Colors and typefaces are dramatic, images are huge, social sharing features are discreetly accessible and interaction opportunities are appropriate for this brand’s targeted users. All-in-all, it has established a better web presence for a very high-end publication.

Cigarette packs get colorful for ‘light’ label ban

by mozkart (via)
Colors shape perceptions of risks on all products, Hammond said. For example, mayonnaise and soda usually use lighter colors on their packaging to distinguish between diet, light and regular products.

Taste the Rainbow: Cigarette Makers' Colorful Answer to FDA Packaging Regs | Fast Company

controversial descriptors like "light," "mild," and "low tar," terms that regulators claim improperly imply healthful qualities (and are already banned in dozens of countries around the world). While tobacco companies have until June 22, 2010, to drop the language from their marketing, some brands are already evolving the language and colors on their packaging.

Judge Lifts Some Limits on Tobacco Ads and Labels - NYTimes.com

by mozkart (via)
As written, the law would limit advertising to black text with no graphics except in magazines with few young readers or in retail establishments open only to adults. Arguing in favor of that restriction, the government had asserted that companies were using light colors and appealing imagery as substitutes for their misleading use of the terms “light” and “low tar,” which will be banned in June. The judge ruled that companies could use imagery and colors appropriately to communicate “what the product is and who makes it.” He dismissed government objections that such marketing tailored to adults would unduly influence children. If that part of the ruling is upheld, Reynolds could continue using a colored drawing of a camel to promote Camel cigarettes, and Lorillard could continue promoting the aqua color associated with Newport, the leading menthol brand, company spokesmen said. “We are gratified that the court upheld our free speech rights to use color and graphics in our advertising to communicate with our adult consumers,” said Michael W. Robinson, a Lorillard spokesman.

100 Colors, 100 Writings, 100 Days: Observatory: Design Observer

by jeanruaud
Every day for one hundred days (from October 30, 2008 to February 6, 2009) I picked a paint chip out of a bag and responded to it with a short writing. I have selected my favorite forty, titling each writing with the number of the day it was written (out of 100) and the name of the color from that day’s paint chip. This project was generated in Michael Bierut’s 100 Day Workshop at the Yale School of Art.
