Cambodia Tuk-Tuk Drivers Hit a Bump | News | Khmer-English

by karlcow

While demand is sinking, costs for tuk-tuk drivers continue. Sambath has recently invested in a new tuk-tuk and motor, that cost him close to $2,000. Drivers are also required to pay the government $5 annually to renew their operating licences.According to Sambath, living expenses in Siem Reap have risen, especially in the areas of housing and food, making it more difficult for the working class to make ends meet. He said more than a third of drivers' salaries go to room rentals, as most of them come from villages in search of better job opportunities in Siem Reap.

Exclusive: Adobe ceases development on mobile browser Flash, refocuses efforts on HTML5 | ZDNet

by srcmax
Sources close to Adobe that have been briefed on the company’s future development plans have revealed this forthcoming announcement to ZDNet: Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.

Life Rafts and Leviathan™ « Free Association Design (F.A.D.)

by karlcow

In contrast to mash terracing, which attempts to passively aggregate land by building up strategically arranged earth forms that require significant time, specialized labor, earth movers,  raw building material, and  money to create their foundation, the floating island technique (should it prove successful in the dynamic Mississippi Delta) literally builds from the top down, using a more passive biotic process of roots grafting themselves into the receding aqueous ground, thereby creating a vertical mesh that builds upon itself. The islands themselves can be assembled and put in place in a single day with improvised ‘off the shelf’ materials, making them incredibly close to open-source, do-it-yourself  land reclamation within the eccentric industrial legacies of the delta.

Daring Fireball Linked List: Against Close Buttons

by night.kame

Gestures, to me, are the touchscreen equivalent of keyboard shortcuts: a convenient alternative, but almost never a good choice for the primary interface for a task. So, sure, it’d be nice if you could flick pages to the top of the screen to close them in Mobile Safari, but keep the red close button there too.

The key to iOS’s success is that you can figure almost everything out just by looking at it.

Kern Type, the kerning game

Instructions Your mission is simple: achieve pleasant and readable text by distributing the space between letters. Typographers call this activity kerning. Your solution will be compared to typographer's solution, and you will be given a score depending on how close you nailed it. Good luck!

Soft-Maps are quilted maps of cities and neighborhoods that represent someone's unique place in the world, and are tactile keepsakes meant to last generations. Wrap your children in them, have a picnic, pull them close during the next Nor'easter.

The Death of Captain America Omnibus

by alamat & 1 other (via)
This a an excellent, lovely collection of some wonderful “Captain America” stories between issues 25-42 of the current Captain America series being published by Marvel comics. Although not a perfect collection, it comes pretty close, and is presented in a sturdy, wonderful and high quality format that will look great on any shelf and stand up to several readings.

Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth

by alamat & 1 other (via)
Yeah, it sure is. Does it succeed? You better believe it! I’ve been into the Merc with a Mouth for quite a few years now. Honestly, besides Joe Kelly’s work, this has to be some of the best writing I’ve read in a Deadpool book. It doesn’t quite reach Kelly’s level, but it sure comes close.

Mud Run Races, Training and Gear

by personmark
Finding a mud run The best way to find a mud run to compete can be a little bit tricky. Mud runs aren’t as common as 5K’s, which are usually a dime a dozen on any given Saturday, and this is due to staging the muddy course. There is not a comprehensive calendar that exclusively lists mud runs. Some online calendars can classify mud runs as adventure races or even trail runs. The best way to find a mud run in your area would be to do a simple google search. Just type mud run and your local zip code in the search bar, and see what comes up. Also, if your community has a local running club, that would be a good place to inquire. Finally, just drive to a local running store in your area and ask the manager. They are usually more then happy to help, and may even have registration forms on site. With a little time and the proper resources, you will be able to find a mud run close to you and start getting dirty. Happy hunting.

mom, this is how twitter works. | not just for moms!

by jeanruaud (via)
Twitter is an online social networking tool in which users post 140 character updates of what is going on in their lives along with links to things they think are interesting, funny, or useful to their followers (“following” being essentially what “friending” is on other sites). People use twitter in many ways, some as a newsfeed by following prominent people or networks, some as a pseudo-chatroom by limiting their followers and whom they follow to close friends and family, and some as a microblog for updating people about the work they are doing and their personal lives.

You’ve Got to Have (150) Friends - NYTimes.com

by jeanruaud
Put simply, our minds are not designed to allow us to have more than a very limited number of people in our social world. The emotional and psychological investments that a close relationship requires are considerable, and the emotional capital we have available is limited. Indeed, no matter what Facebook allows us to do, I have found that most of us can maintain only around 150 meaningful relationships, online and off — what has become known as Dunbar’s number. Yes, you can “friend” 500, 1,000, even 5,000 people with your Facebook page, but all save the core 150 are mere voyeurs looking into your daily life — a fact incorporated into the new social networking site Path, which limits the number of friends you can have to 50. What’s more, contrary to all the hype and hope, the people in our electronic social worlds are, for most of us, the same people in our offline social worlds. In fact, the average number of friends on Facebook is 120 to 130, just short enough of Dunbar’s number to allow room for grandparents and babies, people too old or too young to have acquired the digital habit.
