The Liberal Critique of Obama: Judging the President by His Own Standards - Conor Friedersdorf - Politics - The Atlantic

by karlcow

Yet Obama hasn't played the game that he promised. Instead, the game he has played has been exactly the game that Hillary Clinton promised and that Bill Clinton executed: striking a bargain with the most powerful lobbyists as a way to get a bill through--and as it turns out, the people don't have the most powerful lobbyists.

Association 45 Tour

by shadoko

Worlds of Wonder

by tadeufilippini (via)
Oxymoron: White Conservative Rappers from Dartmouth June 23, 2009 — worldsofwonder These two Dartmouth undergrads don’t have any inkling how foolish they look. They’ve been told by Mike Huckabee they’re great, and they believe him, because, after all it is Mike Huckabee. They are quite possibly the only “rappers” who have every worn striped ties and blazers and flaunted gangsta signs. Mike Huckabee introduces them: “We got a couple of guys who don’t fit the mold. They don’t look like rap stars. And their conservative views don’t really mix with those of most of their peers at their North Eastern Ivy League school. As a sidenote, from the front Mike Huckabee looks just a little above normal weight. But from the side in this video, he still looks a bit hefty. A couple of years ago I covered the New Hampshire Primaries as press. At one Hillary Clinton event I noticed a new reporter and asked whom he had been covering. He said he had been covering Mike Huckabee but couldn’t take crazy world any longer and asked to be changed to a different campaign, any campaign.

A Survey of Rel Values on the Web » DeWitt Clinton

by karlcow, 2 comments

The mapreduce scanned approximately 177 million recently crawled HTML documents, parsing and counting rel values in link and anchor tags along the way. In those 177M documents, I found just over 19 billion <a> and <link> tags in total. And of those 19B tags, 1.8 billion of them contained a non-empty rel attribute.

Unbelievable Mental Lapse » DeWitt Clinton

How someone could enter the wrong email address into one of these forms is beyond me.

the quick answer is gmail. The uniformity of an interface makes it prone to mistake by maximizing the likehood of the mistake. If everyone has a different domain lucia@example.org and lucis@example.net have more chances to be detected as mistakes by the server. but if everyone is using a unique email service with millions of users, all the possible names are indeed likely. Then when someone makes a typo the mail indeed arrives somewhere instead of generating a “Sorry, No User Here”.

Ideas and Trends - For New Journalists, All Bets, but Not Mikes, Are Off - NYTimes.com

by filloux
For New Journalists, All Bets, but Not Mikes, Are Off By JACQUES STEINBERG Published: June 8, 2008 A 61-year-old woman elbows her 5-foot-2-inch frame to the front of the crowd mobbing Bill Clinton after a campaign event in South Dakota. As Mr. Clinton shakes her hand and holds it tight, she deftly draws him into a response to an article on the Vanity Fair Web site that examines his post-presidential life. “Sleazy” and “slimy” are among the words that issue from the former president’s mouth. Within hours, audio of the three-minute exchange — including the woman’s description of the article as a “hatchet job,” and Mr. Clinton’s description of Todd Purdum, the author and a former reporter for The New York Times, as “dishonest” — is available for the world to hear on the Huffington Post Web site.

Hillary Clinton On Saturday Night Live

by starmuscle
Saturday Night Live jumped in the Hillary Clinton beatdown this weekend. Amy Poehler started the show with her spot-on Hillary Clinton impression. “Hillary” said she’s still in the race because she’s a sore loser, her supporters are racist, and if she gets the nomination, she’ll use the sexist and racist cards against John McCain - because she’s just that ruthless. I think was over the line. Yes Hillary is a sore loser but to call her supporters RACIST is just a little too over the top in my opinion. BUT FUNNY!

Latest NBC Poll: Obama is in Surprisingly Good Shape

by democrattotheend
While his support among white voters has slipped a few points since the last poll, he actually does better among whites against McCain than Clinton, losing the white vote 49-38, as opposed to 53-38 for Clinton. The 11-point deficit among whites might look discouraging, but it’s important to keep in mind that Kerry lost the white vote by 17 points in 2004. Obama is only 3 points below Kerry’s percentage of the white vote (41%), while McCain is 9 points behind Bush’s 58% (the rest are undecided).

Quantitative Analysis - Why Ferraro's Claims are Inaccurate

by democrattotheend
Much has already been said about Geraldine Ferraro’s controversial comments implying that Obama wouldn’t be where he is if he were white (or a woman). The purpose of this post is not to attack or defend her comments, but to test her hypothesis that Clinton has been hampered by her gender while Obama has been helped by his race by looking at the exit poll numbers for people who said that a candidate’s race or gender had any influence on their vote.

Clinton to fight for every delegate - msnbc.com

by ravi
“Could we possibly have a nominee who hasn't won any of the significant states -- outside of Illinois?” Chief Strategist Mark Penn said. “That raises some serious questions about Sen. Obama.” Howard Wolfson, communications director, pointed out, “We do better the more voters vote. The largest turnout primaries, by in large, are the ones that have favored us. …The presidential election is not a caucus; it’s an election for the most people to get out and vote.”

Black Leader, a Clinton Ally, Tilts to Obama - NYT

by ravi
Representative John Lewis, an elder statesman from the civil rights era and one of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most prominent black supporters, said Thursday night that he planned to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Senator Barack Obama in hopes of preventing a fight at the Democratic convention.

AlterNet: Obamanomics: Barack Talks Tough on Trade

by ravi
On Wednesday, the first full day of a Wisconsin primary campaign that he hopes will solidify his emerging lead over his once "inevitable" rival, the Illinois senator started in Janesville, where he delivered a rebuke to free-trade policies of the Bill Clinton and George Bush eras that sounded a little like a speech Feingold might have delivered.

AlterNet: Obama Is Sub-Prime on Lending Crisis

by ravi
As the subprime mortgage debacle drives a recession that threatens financial markets around the world, the Democratic presidential candidates are pushing plans to address the crisis. John Edwards and Hillary Clinton are pledging substantial federal resources to stabilize the mortgage market and intervene on behalf of borrowers. Barack Obama's proposal is tepid by comparison, short on aggressive government involvement and infused with conservative rhetoric about fiscal responsibility. As he has done on domestic issues like healthcare, job creation and energy policy, Obama is staking out a position to the right of not only populist Edwards but Clinton as well.
