Adequately Good - JavaScript Module Pattern: In-Depth - by Ben Cherry

by jpcaruana & 1 other (via)
The module pattern is a common JavaScript coding pattern. It's generally well understood, but there are a number of advanced uses that have not gotten a lot of attention. In this article, I'll review the basics and cover some truly remarkable advanced topics, including one which I think is original.

Hellspawn: Complete Collection

by alamat & 1 other (via)
As a casual comic reader (mostly cherry picking the best series once collected), I’m not sure I enjoyed this collection. The artwork, while beautiful, frequently caused confusion as to who was who. It certainly set the mood, but when dialog happened I frequently couldn’t even tell who was speaking. The story, while appropriately dark and gritty, occasionally exacerbated the confusion by switching narrative approaches.

63.02° / Jo Nagasaka Schemata | ArchDaily

by karlcow

63.02º, built in a densely residential area in Nakano, Tokyo, is a small building of a SOHO and an apartment for rent. The front road is really narrow, but the next apartment has a big open space between the road and the building. In order to this situation, the facade of 63.02° is inclined 63.02 degrees toward the front road, so that a wide and deep view is acquired. From the large windows that are opened on the inclined facade, you can see neighbor’s cherry tree and the cityscape.

llimllib's cherry-blossom at master - GitHub

by karlcow

Cherry Blossom is a blogging system written in Python. It was written specifically because I had a lot of pyblosxom blog entries on my previous blog, but I wanted to use cherrypy instead of plain-ol cgi. It adds features like object publishing, session support, access to lots of cherrypy plugins, access to GET and POST vars as method parameters, and others. This software's been running my blog (http://billmill.org) for over two years now, and has survived a couple redditings and a flood from stumbleupon, all without a hiccup.

BibliOdyssey: Ainu Komonjo

by karlcow

The woodblock illustrations below were cherry-picked from a Wisconsin University collection of about forty books presenting the earliest depictions - from the 18th and 19th centuries - of the Ainu people by the Japanese. The images are in haphazard order and are primarily of the Sakhalin Ainu (pronounced eye-noo)

Trailer - Yamazakura - Nippon Cinema

by sbrothier
Drawn to a tree full of beautiful cherry blossoms, Noe (Lena Tanaka) meets a man named Yoichiro Tezuka (Noriyuki Higashiyama). He happens to be one of the men she could have been arranged to marry before choosing her current husband, but she turned him down because he had a child. He asks her if she’s happy. She tells him yes, but in her heart she knows that’s not really true.

Language Log » Google Books: A Metadata Train Wreck

by night.kame

It might seem easy to cherry-pick howlers from a corpus as exensive as this one, but these errors are endemic. Do a search on "internet" in books written before 1950 and Google Scholar turns up 527 hits

On connaissait Gmail la poubelle à courriels, maintenant on a Google Scholar la poubelle à livres.

Shadows from Another Place | NT2

by karlcow

by sbrothier
Miam

LYRICS - Jamaica Farewell

[an error occurred while processing this directive] The Lyrics Connection Jamaica Farewell by Erving Burgess Down the way where the nights are gay And the sun shines daily on the mountain top I took a trip on a sailing ship And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop CHORUS: But I'm sad to say, I'm on my way Won't be back for many a day My heart is down, my head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town Sounds of laughter everywhere And the dancing girls swaying to and fro I must declare that my heart is there Though I've been from Maine to Mexico CHORUS Down at the market you can hear Ladies cry out while on their head they bear Ackie rice and salt fish is nice And the rum is good any time of year CHORUS CHORUS ©Cherry Lane Music Co (ASCAP)

NIHONTO-NO-BI: Tsuba I

by sbrothier
Sukashi Tetsu Tsuba These tsuba are made from forged iron (tetsu) plate and have designs or patterns cut into them. Some of the more elaborate could take up to three months to complete. Sukashi work is of two basic types: Ko-sukashi:   in negative relief, where a minor design is cut into the plate (e.g. a cherry blossom); these tsuba were often produced by swordsmiths (tosho) or armour-makers (katchushi or kacchushi), however many were also produced by tsubako of different schools and signed. Ji-sukashi:   in positive relief, where a large amount of the plate is removed, and the design is formed by the plate that remains. There are two forms of ji-sukashi: (a) yo- (you) sukashi, a positive silhouette where metal is removed to leave a solid shape; and (b) kage-sukashi, a type of negative silhouette where only the outline of the design remains, such as with a pencil drawing.

The Mobile City » Blog Archive » Locative media and the situationists

by karlcow

What struck me was that locative media practitioners often refer back to the situationists as some kind of ancestors, as if they’re working in the same vein. …

But that, to me, seems to be where the similarities end. As alive-and-kicking situationist muse Jacqueline de Jong pointed out during the evening, the situationists wanted one thing above all else: to destroy and disrupt our cushy society. They were sick of it, vowing never to work a day in their lives. They probably would have laughed if they had seen that their ideas had been cherry-picked for ripe concepts. The derive, the detournement. All simple concepts that they purposefully packaged in complex and artistc jargon. And we fell for it.
