A better way to use icon fonts — yatil. Eric Eggert about web development & design.

by Spone
There are some browser and screen reader combinations that treat CSS not only as a presentational thing, but apply meaning according to the used properties. For example some won’t read a list if you use list-style: none; in your CSS. This assumes that the meaning of your HTML is overwritten by the visual style: If it doesn’t look like a dumb bullet list, it must be no list at all. I’m not sure I conclude with that assumption, but that isn’t the main point of the article here.

by bouilloire
Je ne sais pas lequel des deux me fait le plus peur entre la fan de Twilight qui se balade en robe de mariée et Harry Potter qui le jour où il va se faire cambrioler, va pleurer sa mère.

Fiberevolution: The Slow Suicide of Net Discrimination

by karlcow

That is the most dangerous fight. When you fight for something you truly believe will save you when in fact it cannot, you divert resources from addressing the real issues. This is a typical case of focusing the attention on a perceived external threat because addressing the internal (and structural problems) is more complicated and seems like less of a silver bullet.

Opera's Developer Relations Team - There's more to mobile than media queries

Designing for low spec, slow connection speed devices and then progressively enhancing, although not a silver bullet, seems to be the best foundation for a maintainable, accessible and future-proof site.

How to prototype interactive iPad applications in 30 minutes or less using Apple Keynote | Amir Khella

by sbrothier & 2 others
The best product presentations are the ones where less is said and more is shown. Yet most people end up describing their product in bullet points, charts, tables, or boxes and arrows. There are few who take the time to create static wireframes or interactive prototypes, but the challenge is that building and showing a prototype requires you to break the flow of your presentation to switch to a different tool. And we’ve all seen presentations fall apart because a tool is not properly installed or a wireless network is not available.

"Let's see, there's Cardinal, Kelly, Rosamond, Jesse, Payne, Clay, Graham, Socrates, Bram, Dino, Emmanuel, God, Fredo, Ares, Mephistopheles, Pride, Envy, Julia, Black Jade, Reba, Hunter, and Jared. Believe me, that's a lot of hair, eyes and clothing to describe ... it took about another hundred pages." Soo true

Obviously a lot of embellishment can be added to make the map look as g

Les américains surfent (plus) la nuit

by thomas.deyries
* We all share the same morning and evening Internet addiction: On average, European traffic starts picking up around 5am GMT / 7 am CEST and similarly US traffic takes off around the same time at 7am EDT. Internet traffic also reaches its peaks in the early evening (7pm GMT / 9pm CEST in Europe and 10pm EDT / 7 pm PDT in the US). * North American’s don’t surf over dinner: Unlike European traffic, US daily Internet percentages take a small dip in the early evening between 6pm and 10pm EDT. In contrast, Europe traffic keeps climbing through the evening until a marked 9pm GMT / 11pm CEST drop off. Of course, Europeans tend towards later (and longer) dinner hours than their North American counterparts. * What Europeans do at night: Actually, this bullet point should be what Europeans don’t do at night — spend a lot of time on the Internet. In contrast to North America, European traffic plummets much more steeply and reaches a lower daily minimum than US traffic (US traffic never drops below 50% whereas Europe declines more more than 60% from its peak). Apparently, North American Internet users stay up later and use the Internet longer (next blog post we’ll explore what they’re doing on the Internet late at night).

5 Design Decision Styles. What's Yours?

by greut (via)

In our research, we found that the most effective teams were skilled in all five styles, choosing the style that best fit the needs and goals of a project. For example, they might concurrently be involved in deep research on a User-Focused project, while relying on their experience for a Genius designed project, and spend a little time whipping out some one-shot functionality whose results would be Unintended Design.

Since the teams are working with different styles all the time, does it matter? Our research says it does. The teams that produced the best experiences knew these styles well and how to quickly switch between them. They knew when they needed to go whole hog and pull out all the stops for a User-Focused style project, while also knowing when it was important to bang out a quick design, knowing the results would essentially be unintended. Those teams had a rich toolbox of techniques and a solid understanding on how and when to use them.

There is no silver bullet.
