George R.R. Martin on Sex, Fantasy, and 'A Dance With Dragons' - Rachael Brown - Entertainment - The Atlantic

by bouilloire (via)

"I think some fans are hoping we'll end up with eight books. Well, it's grown in the past—I'm not going to say those fans are wrong. When I started out, it was a trilogy. Back in 1994 when I sold this, it was going to be A Game of Thrones, A Dance with Dragons, The Winds of Winter—three books. But that scheme went out the window before I'd even finished the first book. I think it was Tolkien who said when he was writing The Lord of the Rings, "The tale grew in the telling."

California Library Association: Legislation -- GOVERNOR RELEASES 2011-12 BUDGET - LIBRARY FUNDING DECIMATED

by karlcow

This morning newly elected Governor, Jerry Brown, released his 2011-12 Budget proposal, calling it “painful” and one that “requires sacrifice from every sector of the state, but we have no choice.”  The plan recommends a whopping $12.5 billion in cuts and $12 billion in revenue options in order to address the staggering $25 billion Budget, as well as a “vast and historic restructuring of services,” as part of the Governor’s realignment proposal.

Mic-UK [site A]: diatoms

by fotopol
What are diatoms? Diatoms are delicate unicellular organisms that have a yellow-brown chloroplast that enables them to photosynthesize. Their cell walls are made of silica almost like a glass house. The construction of the cell wall, called the frustule, consists of two valves that fit into each other like a little pill box.

INTRODUCTION

by karlcow

Our company undertook the project in secret with a limited team, at a building in our Courbevoie facility called ‘B12’. We baptized this project “Projet Montgolfier”, in honor of the French brothers who were the first men to experience free flight. Our first goal was to make a complete scientific study of the Biefeld–Brown effect.

Humanities (formerly Humanity-Colors) GNOME-Look.org

by tadeufilippini
Humanities (formerly Humanity-Colors) 0.2 GNOME Icon Theme jennie Description: A modified version of the Ubuntu Humanity Icon theme that allows you to easily change the icon colors. Essentially, Humanities was inspired by the Gnome-Colors project. Humanity is designed and developed by Daniel Foré, Jonian Guveli, and K.Vishnoo Charan Reddy. DOWNLOAD: Humanities and Humanities-Dark are the versions for Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) users. (If you are not using Ubuntu 10.04, make sure you have Humanity and ubuntu-mono installed for these versions to display properly.) Humanities-G and Humanities-G-Dark keep the original Humanity look, and use the gnome icon for the main menu. Please look at the screenshots before choosing your version(s). INSTALL: I recommend installing and modifying Humanities through MagIcons http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/MagIcons?content=120508 . From the MagIcons window, Select File->Install new icon set and browse for the Humanities.tar.bz2 package. You can now use this graphical application to preview, customize, and install themes. Alternatively, decompress the file to your Home folder and follow the instructions in the file INSTRUCTIONS.html (inside the Humanities folder). NOTE: I am trying to keep this theme as close as possible to the original Humanity theme. So, I have not added any icons of my own, and I have only recolored icons that were orange, brown, or purple. This was deliberate, and I will not be changing the policy. However, I will try my best to fix any mistakes I am alerted to, and to keep this theme up-to-date with new versions of the official Humanity theme. Changelog: 30-04-10 Upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 look. Magicons support. Dark panels version. 12-01-10 Added preview for text documents. 10-01-10 Added brasero panel icons from Elementary-monochrome. Updated instructions file. 27-12-09 Updated instructions file. 19-12-09 Updated instructions file. Changed a couple of icons. New download link. 18-12-09 Updated instructions file. Added new colour schemes. License: GPL

From Do It Yourself to Do It Together - John Hagel III and John Seely Brown - Harvard Business Review

by karlcow

But maybe DIY is just a precursor to even more powerful forms of Do It Together (DIT), pulling together larger numbers of diversified and talented individuals to more and more rapidly innovate and drive new levels of performance on a continuing basis. Of course, whenever a team forms, we have a form of DIT but, as we all know, teams are not scalable. What we would really need is an environment where many teams can organize and begin to create and share knowledge across team boundaries.

Metabolic Dark City: Observatory: Design Observer

by karlcow

In 1993, the City of Darkness, or the Walled City of Kowloon, was demolished. To the 35,000 people living in this dense urban slum, the change was the end of a lawless existence. The area was a diplomatic black hole, the model of an anarchist society somehow allowed to grow organically without the aid of any government, existing somewhere outside of both British Hong Kong and China.

The buildings of "Hak Nam" folded into one other in a dense configuration of labyrinthine corridors and seedy brown shacks stacked up 10, 12 and 14 stories high. It was a solid building, 200 x 100 meters, a pulsating anomaly, one of the most densely populated places in the world at the time of its destruction. It was called "the world’s first flexible megastructure, the closest thing to a truly self-regulating, self-sufficient, self determining modern city that has ever been built," "an environment as richly varied and as sensual as anything in the heart of the tropical forest."

Scott Brown on Why Some Memes Never Die | Magazine

by alphoenix
Now, getting nostalgic for a fin de Netscape time-waster is a new and disturbing sensation for me: Web content is designed to dissolve in your brain like dopamine Certs. Yet my Homestar bar stool still feels warm: Firing up the old URL, knit cap in hand, I’m suddenly back in the early Aughts, watching Strong Bad answer his email, kick the Cheat, his rhomboid accomplice, and dream up such memorable mini-memes as the majestic dragon Trogdor the Burninator — a Trapper Keeper-quality pencil doodle with a catchy metal theme song. (It ended up name-checked in the Buffy finale and eventually landed in Guitar Hero II.)

La Saga des francs maçons: Amazon.fr: Frédéric Lenoir, Marie-France Etchegoin: Livres

by bouilloire
Marie-France Etchegoin était sur France-Info ce matin et bien que n'étant pas franchement portée sur la franc-maçonnerie, je la soutiens dans son effort de révéler toutes les conneries que raconte Dan Brown dans ses livres. Donc avant de lire the Last Symbol, lisez donc celui-ci.
