[16x16][C&C] House Tileset

you can avoid texture overload -- by EyeCraft "The main tool you want to use is simplification. You want to simplify shapes down and work in broad blocks of colour with accented bits of detail. This lets you use all kinds of bright, saturated colour at any level of contrast without introducing graininess."

Thousand of APIs Paint a Bright Future for the Web | Webmonkey | Wired.com

by oseres
Once a novel idea that seemed limited to Flickr, the web-based API is now everywhere you turn — Twitter, Foursquare, Google Maps and thousands of other sites offer up their data in the form of an API. APIs mean that third-party developers can build their own tools and mashups, which in turn helps to fuel the popularity of the web service. It’s hard to imagine where sites like Flickr and Twitter would be today without APIs. In fact, these days some web services don’t even bother launching websites to go with their APIs — the API is the service. The SimpleGeo API, for example, doesn’t really have a corresponding website, it’s just an API that can be used anywhere, including inside mobile apps.

10 hours with the iPad: Why the iPad Is Not a Kindle Killer | Dear Author: Romance Novel Reviews, Industry News, and Commentary

by night.kame

Hardware: The iPad is fairly heavy. It weighs 1.5 pounds versus the Kindle’s 10.2 oz. Plus, it is unuseable in bright sunlight. You really, really need to have some shade to be able to see much of anything.  You can see the comparison between the two.  The indoor picture is the exact same screen, finger prints and all.

Selon John Gruber, l'iPad est parfaitement utilisable à l'extérieur en plein soleil : Apple est innovant, mais pas le Soleil qui n'a pas compris qu'il ne fallait pas éclairer directement l'iPad.

Annabel Lee - Edgard Allan Poe / Fernando Pessoa

by tadeufilippini
FERNANDO PESSOA ANNABEL LEE * (by Edgar Allan Poe) It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea; But we loved with a love that was more than love- I and my Annabel Lee; With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsman came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in heaven, Went envying her and me- Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we- Of many far wiser than we- And neither the angels in heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea, Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee. For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so,all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride, In the sepulchre there by the sea, In her tomb by the sounding sea. * This poem was translated to portuguese by Fernando Pessoa

On a dark and rainy night, bright and blinding lights approach a vacant lot, off a Japanese highway - just if Shibuya’s blinking neon signs decided to move themselves past you… However, it’s some proud and lonely trucker halting for a rest! Welcome to the world of Decotora, short for decorated trucks!

Marshall Alexander - Paper Engineer

by sbrothier & 4 others
I am a Dutch paper engineer, based in Arnhem, and my work mainly focuses on the creation of papertoys. I either create completely new characters from scratch or I transform existing characters into papermodels. My speciality is one-piece papertoys, models that consist of a single flat piece of paper, which by intricate folding is transformed into a 3-dimensional model. I also create more complex templates consisting of several parts that are glued together to construct the final model. I've have done commissioned work for the toy industry, for promotional purposes and for books and magazines. Growing up in the seventies and eighties, my personal work is heavily inspired by retro design, videogames, movies, bright plastic toys and TV cartoons. Most of this work can be downloaded for free from my site. So get your knives and glue out, download some of the models and start building. Enjoy!

Photoshop High Key Glow Effect Tutorial

by mozkart (via)
In this Photoshop tutorial, we'll learn how to create a high key glow effect, which is a fancy way of saying we'll be applying a glow only to the highlights in an image. This effect works especially well with wedding portraits since it's great for adding a romantic, magical look to your photos, and wedding portraits usually contain lots of bright white areas to work with. We'll see how to easily select just the highlights in an image using Photoshop's Color Range command, then we'll copy the highlights to their own layer and create the glow effect using a blur filter and one of Photoshop's layer blend modes designed for lightening images. Finally, we'll combine layers into a layer group and use a layer mask to limit the areas where the glow effect is visibile. It may sound like a lot of work, but once you know how to do it, the entire effect can be completed in just a few minutes! I'm using Photoshop CS4 here, but any recent version of Photoshop will work.

Milk Bottle LED Lights, Arduino Controlled

by karlcow

Make PPE milk bottles into good looking LED lights, and use an Arduino to control them. This recycles a number of things, mainly the milk bottles, and uses a very low amount of power: the LEDs apparently dissipate less than 3 watts but are bright enough to see by!
