glamrock/Soapy - GitHub

by karlcow

Soapy is a small, free Fire Fox plugin that allows users to go to web sites banned under SOPA -- making SOPA, if it is passed, moot. It focuses on the DNS-blocking technique favored by oppressive regimes and middle management. Because this is designed to go around a complete block, HTTPS is disabled for sites covered by this plugin.

Insane Entitlement: EMI Sues Irish Gov't For Not Passing SOPA-Like Censorship Law | Techdirt

by karlcow

major record label EMI (in the process of being acquired by Universal Music to make it the largest record label by far) is suing the Irish government because it feels the Irish government is taking too long to pass a SOPA-like law that would require ISPs to censor the internet and block access to sites it doesn't like.

Why Johnny Can’t Opt Out: A Usability Evaluation of Tools to Limit Online Behavioral Advertising

by karlcow

We present results of a 45-participant laboratory study investigating the usability of tools to limit online behavioral advertising (OBA).We tested nine tools, including tools that block access to advertising websites, tools that set cookies indicating a user’s preference to opt out of OBA, and privacy tools that are built directly into web browsers. We interviewed participants about OBA, observed their behavior as they installed and used a privacy tool, and recorded their perceptions and attitudes about that tool. We found serious usability flaws in all nine tools we examined. The online opt-out tools were challenging for users to understand and configure. Users tend to be unfamiliar with most advertising companies, and therefore are unable to make meaningful choices. Users liked the fact that the browsers we tested had built-in Do Not Track features, but were wary of whether advertising companies would respect this preference. Users struggled to install and configure blocking lists to make effective use of blocking tools. They often erroneously concluded the tool they were using was blocking OBA when they had not properly configured it to do so.

Re: Validator parses HTML in CSS block comment? from Leif Halvard Silli on 2011-08-16 (www-validator@w3.org from August 2011)

Ahem ... Please advice people to use HTML5, as you obviously don't understand HTML4 ... ;-)

Il n'y a jamais eu d'HTML4, seulement HTML 4. Mais côté HTML-LS ils ont du mal avec la barre espace visiblement.

But, to answer Russel's question, this behaviour is not correct, as no Web browser behave that way. Hence, HTML5 has changed the rules to be more in line with how browsers actually act: In the HTML serialization of HTMl5, the "</div>" *is* permitted. (In the XML serialization - also known as XHTML - it remains forbidden.)

La sérialisation XML de HTML 5 n'a strictement rien à voir avec XHTML. A se demander si c'est de l'incompréhension ou de la simple désinformation.

Further more, if Russel simply just replaces the XHTML doctype with the HTML5 doctype, the file will validate as is, with the xmlns namespace >and everything. (The xmlns namespace validates only because HTML5' generous permission - and not because it plays any role.)

SQLite is very careful about measuring its memory usage and provides an API to access those measurements.  But in order to measure its own memory usage accurately, it adds 8 bytes to every allocation request in order to store the requested size at the start of the resulting heap block.  In doing so, it converts a lot of 1,024 byte requests into 1,032 byte requests.  Ironically enough, the slop caused by storing the requested size rendered the stored size inaccurate.

beware of what you measure might become part of the measurement.

Make Eclipse formatter ignore comments? - Stack Overflow

by night.kame

There is another solution that you can use to suppress the formatting of specific block comments. Use /*- (note the hyphen) at the beginning of the block comment, and the formatting

won't be affected if you format the rest of the file.

Bring one hand up, close to your chest, just below eye level. Point your fingers in front of you, shaping your hand like a paddle. As you move, you can use this to indicate where you're heading. When people see it, they'll understand that you're on the move and you aren't trying to simply squeeze in front of them and block their view.
