One year ago, I started collecting screen captures of Google Street Views from a range of Street View blogs and through my own hunting. This essay illustrates how my Street View collections reflect the excitement of exploring this new, virtual world. The world captured by Google appears to be more truthful and more transparent because of the weight accorded to external reality, the perception of a neutral, unbiased recording, and even the vastness of the project. At the same time, I acknowledge that this way of photographing creates a cultural text like any other, a structured and structuring space whose codes and meaning the artist and the curator of the images can assist in constructing or deciphering.

Favicon - How To Create A Favicon.ico | PhotoshopSupport.com

by oseres & 6 others (via)
A Favicon is a little custom icon that appears next to a website's URL in the address bar of a web browser. They also show up in your bookmarked sites, on the tabs in tabbed browsers, and as the icon for Internet shortcuts on your desktop or other folders in Windows. And when I say little, I mean 16 pixels by 16 pixels. So if you like a good design challenge try your hand at this one.

Kiai: The Fading Cry of the Martial Artist

by Takwann
Perhaps one of the most neglected natural martial arts weapon is the voice. It appears to be little more than a ritual in most dojos, dojangs, kwoons or gyms of today.

we.b: The web of short URLs - Microsoft Research

by karlcow

Surprisingly short URLs are not ephemeral, as a significant fraction, roughly 50%, appears active for more than three months.

Finding Usability Bugs with Automated Tests - ACM Queue

Ideally, all software should be easy to use and accessible for a wide range of people; however, even software that appears to be modern and intuitive often falls short of the most basic usability and accessibility goals.

BIB - Greasemonkey Script) - Exemple - Is this Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Powell's, or Netflix item (book, CD, DVD) available from the Atlanta-Fulton County Georgia Library System? - Atlanta-Fulton County Georgia Library System for Greasemonkey

by decembre
Determines if an Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Powell's, or Netflix item (book, CD, or DVD) is among the holdings of the Atlanta-Fulton County Georgia Library System. When the user navigates to an item, the user script locates, if present, the ISBN-13, the ISBN-10, the title, the author(s), the actor(s), and the director(s) on the page. It then searches the library by ISBN-13 and ISBN-10, by title and each author, by title and each actor, and by title and each director. If a search returns at least one result, a "smile" icon appears above the product image. If the user clicks on the "smile" icon, the browser navigates to the library search result(s) for the item. If no search returns any result, a "frown" icon appears above the product image.

eye | feature : Fashion’s obsessions are mirrored in its typography, From Vogue’s femme serifs to butch Chanel and the hybrid YSL logo

by sbrothier
As late as 1955, Vogue covers vacillated between serif and sans serif typefaces, as well as script faces and illustrative, photographic letters. It was after 1955 that the magazine appears to have legislated a consistent use of the all-capitals banner headline set in Didone lettering. Apart from minor details, it has remained absolutely fixed since then, the trade-dress of a powerful international franchise.

iTravel: Apple's Future Travel Centric App for the iPhone - Patently Apple

by sbrothier
Christina Warrens of Mashable covered our iTunes Concert Ticket + report last week and added that "Delta Airlines, which is headquartered in my hometown, supports digital boarding passes at some of its bigger airports. I love this because it is one less thing to print out and one fewer line to stand in for a boarding pass." Well, Apple appears to agree with that thinking because they're working on a new travel check-in application that they're simply calling "iTravel." Apple is obviously working with the Airlines to ensure that the iPhone will be up to standard when new ticketless systems roll out in the coming years. Apple's iTravel focuses on such matters as airline check-in and baggage identification, advanced electronic ID, car rentals, hotel and airline reservations and so forth. Apple's iTravel is yet another Near Field Communications based application within a host of recent revelations. It would appear, at least on the surface – that Apple may be working on a new suite of NFC related applications for a future iPhone. Perhaps such a suite could be ready by the time they roll out their iPhone 4G next year.

The Era of Location-as-Platform Has Arrived

by karlcow

Canadian newspaper chain Metro announced today that it has launched a deal with location-based social network Foursquare that will deliver location-specific editorial content from the paper's website to users' phones when they check-in near a spot Metro has written about before. The potential for services like this is huge. It's too bad Metro appears to be taking the easy way out and focusing on delivering restaurant reviews, but it's a start.

16. Why does Firefox load my SWF twice?

Firefox 3 has a known issue that sometimes causes a swf to be 'double initialized'. The problem appears to be fixed in their codebase, but has not been released yet. See the following bugs for more details: bug 438830 and bug 445599.

Or, if you have "Disable cache" selected in your Firefox Web Developer Toolbar extension a double load will occur.

keybr.com - take typing speed test and practice typing online

by oseres & 4 others
Have you ever wished that you had a way to practice typing so that you could become a more efficient and capable keyboard jockey? Typing at the “speed of thought,” perhaps? Enter Keybr.com — the flash–based typing instructor you’ve been waiting for! Keybr.com is very straightforward. You can choose from three basic lessons that start with a certain number of keys on the keyboard, and then, as you progress through the lessons, more keys are introduced to the mix to make things a little tougher. As an added bonus, our software keeps track of all your mistakes and your words–per–minute (wpm) — and even creates graphs of your day–by–day performance. But, things get even better! Once you have determined that the lessons you have completed have reached their maximum result, get ready to play with custom mode, where you can edit and personalize the text that you wish to practice! Very bare–bones, but oh, so functional. Finally, to up the entertainment level of your typing lessons, you can import content from a web site or blog into Keybr.com to type it out. But why even bother to learn touch typing? The answer is simple — it is healthier for you, faster and more accurate. Blogging, writing long documents and e–mails, instant messaging with your friends, and even coding sophisticated computer programs will become much easier and more enjoyable once you eliminate distraction of hunt–and–peck typing. If you are curious about how touch typing appears to onlookers, please watch a couple of short YouTube videos demonstrating really high typing speed:

The HTML5 Equilibrium

The result is that HTML5 appears to be a self-contradictory mess. But it's hard to imagine a successful web technology that isn't a mess. That's because the web itself is a mess.

Pushing MRD out from under the geek rock « electronic museum

by karlcow

MRD (That’s Machine Readable Data – I couldn’t seem to find a better term..) is probably about as important as it gets. It underpins an entire approach to content which is flexible, powerful and open. It embodies notions of freely moving data, it encourages innovation and visualisation. It is also not nearly as hard as it appears – or doesn’t have to be.

Behind the Name: Meaning, Origin and History of the Name Thaddeus

by tadeufilippini
THADDEUS Gender: Masculine Usage: English, Biblical Pronounced: THAD-ee-əs (English) [key] From Θαδδαιος (Thaddaios), the Greek form of the Aramaic name Thaddai. It is possibly derived from a word meaning "heart", but it may in fact be an Aramaic form of a Greek name such as Theodoros (see THEODORE). In the Gospel of Matthew Thaddeus is listed as one of the twelve apostles, though elsewhere in the New Testament his name is omitted and Jude's appears instead. It is likely that the two names refer to the same person.

Sea Usplash GNOME-Look.org

Sea Usplash 1.2.2 GNOME Splash Screen greenbehemoth greenbehemot h - mike green United Kingdom, Belfast last visit Apr 13 2009 2 friends 0 groups other contents send a message add as friend more info - - Sea Usplash zoom Sea Usplash zoom Downloads: 5020 Submitted: Jan 8 2009 Updated: Feb 17 2009 Score: score74t%score 74% good bad good Description: UPDATED I got the idea for this from the beautiful Sea GDM theme by Dav87 which uses the same wallpaper - thnx Davide!!! Davide's GDM theme can be found here: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Sea GDM?content=86893 and the original wallpaper here: http://freedomwallpaper.com/ The theme was compiled using the source code for the excellent usplash-smooth usplash theme by volanin which you can find here: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu Usplash Smooth?content=93386 Many thanks to you volanin for your wonderful work :) Please note that this theme was compiled on Intrepid Ibex and will not work on other versions. NOTE If the theme doesn't work for you straight away, please make sure you try changing your resolution settings in startup-manager and /etc/usplash.conf. For example, I have the theme running on three Intrepid Ibex systems as follows: Laptop (native 1280x800): startup-manager 640x480; usplash.conf 1280x800 Monitor 1 (native 1280x1024): startup-manager 1024x768; usplash.conf 1024x768 Monitor 2 (native 1280x1024): startup-manager 800x600; usplash.conf 800x600 Monitors 1 and 2 are almost identical Samsung models, but it appears that Monitor 2 doesn't allow resolutions of greater than 800x600 during boot (boot-up halts and I'm presented with a list of available resolutions, the largest of which is 800x600;32 bit). I hope you enjoy this theme. All comments, criticizers and scoffers welcome :) Changelog: Version 1.2.2 Fixes problem where the theme was not displayed on some systems. Thanks to flysand and Apprenti for drawing the problem to my attention and for their patience and assistance in getting it fixed. Thanks also go to Phylu for his assistance with the code ;) Please note that you do not need this update if your theme is working properly, but it shouldn't do any harm if you choose to install it anyway. Version 1.2.1 Added an option to have the progress bar with minimalistic shading (for those of you who don't like the totally clean version). Just download "usplash-theme-sea-shd.so". Version 1.2.0 After people were having problems I've recompiled the theme with more resolutions included and it seems to work better. But make sure you try changing your res settings in startup-manager and /etc/usplash.conf if it doesn't work for you at first. This version of the theme also has a new progress bar - slightly smaller and clean colors. Hope you like it. Version 1.1.0 Includes better (ie slightly more subtle - I'm no artist) work on the reflection. Sorry the first one was so wick!!!

MaDdoG Software | PlacesBar Editor

by Spone & 1 other
PlacesBarEditor is a free utility for Windows 2000 and Windows ME that allows you to customize the "PlacesBar" that appears on the left side of the Open and Save dialogs in most applications. The PlacesBar is a set of shortcuts to commonly-used folders, but wouldn't it be more useful if you could determine what "commonly used" means for yourself, instead of letting Microsoft define it for you? That's where PlacesBarEditor comes in.
