Mind Maps And Making Notes by Tony Buzan

by jenny82
Tony Buzan has written many books on mind mapping, a great skill to acquire for anyone. This version is well laid out, has easy to read, simple text and lots and LOTS of colour, pictures and diagrams. And, there’s the trick, the book is designed to use many of the 14 brain skills both logical and creative, so making the subject matter immediately more appealing

Muscle Memory - it's all in the mind!

by Takwann
When we are learning a new skill, say for instance a new kata or a new type of kick, your movements may be clumsy and jerky – not at all like your instructors movements. This is because your brain has not yet laid down a memory pattern for this movement. It hasn’t recruited the appropriate motor units in the muscle and developed new neuronal and synaptic connections that enhance communication between the muscle and the brain.

LRB · Eliot Weinberger · ‘Damn right,’ I said

by jeanruaud
Occasionally, someone on Team DP will insert a lyrical phrase – the tears on the begrimed faces of the 9/11 relief workers ‘cutting a path through the soot like rivulets through a desert’ – but most of the prose sounds like this: I told Margaret and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Bolten that I considered this a far-reaching decision. I laid out a process for making it. I would clarify my guiding principles, listen to experts on all sides of the debate, reach a tentative conclusion, and run it past knowledgeable people. After finalising a decision, I would explain it to the American people. Finally, I would set up a process to ensure that my policy was implemented. There are nearly 500 pages of this, reminiscent of the current po-mo poster boys, Tao Lin, with his anaesthetised declarative sentences, and Kenneth Goldsmith with his ‘uncreative writing’, such as a transcription of a year’s worth of daily radio weather reports. Foucault notes: ‘Today’s writing has freed itself from the theme of expression.’

Apple Introduces us to a New iTunes "Concert Ticket +" System - Patently Apple

by sbrothier
There's no missing the point that Apple wants to enter the electronic concert and event ticket business via a new application and system simply called "Concert Ticket +." The system that is laid out in this extraordinarily detailed patent, points to a new iTunes based web service for tickets that will naturally enhance the iTunes music empire. Apple definitely envisions a way to revolutionize the entire current concert ticket process so as to eliminate paper while enhancing the concert or event experience. Today's patent reviews the basics of this new system as well as review the benefits of such a system which could include the concert goer receiving such things as a live recording of the concert they just attended or access to exclusive artist interviews or refreshments. Surprisingly, the patent goes far beyond concerts as well - so as to cover sporting events, amusement park admissions and rides (think Disney), a wedding invitation system and a lot more. In fact, one of the events that the report covers includes Apple's World Wide Developer Conference 2010.

monday note

by blackgoldfish
every monday for the last year my love has written me a special note. i laid them all out on the floor tonight and read them all again. and then i realized... every monday, for the rest of my life, i'm going to wake up excited to read his note. and if we're lucky, and we live for another 50+ years, i'll be the receiver of over two thousand love notes. not bad huh? :) i think i'll keep him.

Coilhouse

by borsky & 1 other
"COILHOUSE is a love letter to alternative culture, written in an era when alternative culture no longer exists. And because it no longer exists, we take from yesterday and tomorrow, from the mainstream and from the underground, to construct our own version. We cover art, fashion, technology, music and film to create an alternative culture that we would like to live in, as opposed to the one that’s being sold or handed down to us. The result, in the form of articles, features and interviews, is laid out on our blog and in our print magazine for all to see. " From "cryptohistory and misanthropology" to "Genghis Khan’s bow" and "body scaffolding"

Flickr Hit Hard By Yahoo Layoffs

Yahoo layoffs have started and seem to have hit the Flickr team. Many engineers from the service have been either laid off or are leaving on their own.

A visual guide to navigating blog comments | Blog | 1976design.com

by Spone (via)
When it comes to following the ebb and flow of comments on blogs, it’s easy to get lost; they’re not laid out in the thread format we see in forums, but in a linear hoppity-skip way that makes a consistent flow of discussion almost impossible to maintain. One comment might not draw a response for a month, by which time fifty other comments may separate the initial post and its follow up. This is the issue I think I’ve dealt with.

Now Flickr is hit by Yahoo layoffs | Technology | guardian.co.uk

that George Oates, a high-profile member of the Flickr team and one of the site's early employees, was told that she was being given the chop too. She's recently been in Australia, so the fact that her bad news has arrived a day late could just be a quirk of travelling - but I'm trying to find out if other members of the Flickr team are also being laid off as well. (Update: I'm told two other members of the Flickr team also got laid off.) Oates - who designed Flickr's interface - is highly-regarded, confirming that this round of job cuts is basically arbitrary - but it also marks a bit of a watershed for Yahoo.

Juicy Studio: Label Positioning

by greut (via)

Forms that are laid out vertically with the prompts to the left of the form control have the advantage that the user can quickly scan down the left-hand side to determine what type of information they are required to provide. This is generally the best approach, although not always practical. For example, in languages such as German (emphasis added) where some words are a lot longer than others, it can create a situation where some prompts may be a long way from their associated form control, which obviously has an impact on usability. In these circumstances, positioning the prompt above the form control may be more appropriate.

nyroModal :: jQuery Plugin

by camel & 5 others

Matt Dent / New UK Coin Designs

by oqdbpo
It's estimated that almost 28 billion United Kingdom coins are in circulation, and if all those circulating coins were laid out side to side they would form a line 397,289 miles long; the distance it would take to travel around the world nearly 16 times. The New reverse designs competition

tom waits - broken bicycles

by tadeufilippini
Broken bicycles, old busted chains With rusted handle bars, out in the rain Somebody must have an orphanage for All these things that nobody wants any more September's reminding July It's time to be saying goodbye Summer is gone, but our love will remain Like old broken bicycles out in the rain Broken bicycles, don't tell my folks ThereÕs all those playing cards pinned to the spokes Laid down like skeletons out on the lawn The wheels won't turn when the other has gone The seasons can turn on a dime Somehow I forget every time For all the things that you've given me will always stay Broken, but I'll never throw them away lyrics: http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/onefromtheheart/brokenbicycles.htm

THE BEATLES LYRICS

by tadeufilippini (via)
The Beatles Lyrics List: (Submit New The Beatles Lyrics) ORMED: 1960, Liverpool, England DISBANDED: 1970 Inspired by the "skiffle boom", a student at Quarry Bank School in Liverpool named John Lennon decided to form a group in 1957 which laid the foundation to what was to become the most famous rock band of all time. John's original name was "The Blackjacks". However, this name only lasted a week and John used the school name as inspiration for the later name "The Quarry Men" in March 1957. John sang and played guitar, Colin Hanton played drums, Eric Griffiths on guitar, Pete Shotton on washboard, Rod Davis on banjo and Bill Smith on tea-chest bass. Bill was soon replaced by Ivan Vaughan.

How Laser Printers First Appeared and Developed

by Stargaser
On October 22, 1938, when American inventor Chester Carlson together with German immigrant Otto Kornei first transferred an image from a glass microscope slide to a sheet of wax paper using method later called electrophotography. Kornei wrote the words “10.-22.-38 ASTORIA.” in ink on a glass microscope slide. Then the experimentalists prepared a zinc plate with a sulphur coating, darkened the room, rubbed the sulphur surface with a handkerchief to apply an electrostatic charge. After that they laid the slide on the zinc plate, exposing it to a bright, incandescent light.
