Concurrence — Concurrence Framework v0.3.1 documentation

by jpcaruana
Concurrence is a framework for creating massively concurrent network applications in Python. It takes a Lightweight-tasks-with-message-passing approach to concurrency. The goal of Concurrence is to provide an easier programming model for writing high performance network applications than existing solutions (Multi-threading, Twisted, asyncore etc). Concurrence uses Lightweight tasks in combination with libevent to expose a high-level synchronous API to low-level asynchronous IO.

Git Undo 999 - How do I undo this operation? - while ("im automaton");

by karlcow

Though Git’s commands are incredibly useful, it’s hard for newcomers to make a good combination of Git’s commands to finish their own tasks, like shell commands. Recent Git’s command-line interface is well polished, but there is no command such as git undo-what-i-did, because things to be undone are varied for each situation. So that we have to execute a bunch of commands to do what we want.

The Frame: Japan marks 6 months since earthquake, tsunami

by karlcow

TOKYO (AP) -- Last Sunday was the six-month anniversary of the day the massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeast coast. Some 20,000 people are dead or missing. More than 800,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed. The disaster crippled businesses, roads and infrastructure. The Japanese Red Cross Society estimates that 400,000 people were displaced. Half a year later, there are physical signs of progress. Much of the debris has been cleared away or at least organized into big piles. In the port city of Kesennuma, many of the boats carried inland by the tsunami have been removed. Most evacuees have moved out of high school gyms and into temporary shelters or apartments. Last week the Kyodo News agency distributed an amazing group of combination photographs showing three scenes. The first scene is right after the earthquake and tsunami hit, then three months later and finally, how the scene looks now. (44 images)

Defuse | Fluid Interfaces

by sbrothier
Defuse is a new method for navigating and participating in online discussions. Previous designs for online discussion were successful under the assumption that participation would be limited to tens or at most hundreds of participants. Emergent social conventions have been able to smooth over media as they scale, but ultimately they are limited by the design of a medium itself. Defuse seeks to continue scaling online discussions by adding social, structural, and historical context throughout the interface, and by widening the expressivity of a message to match the user's intention. It does so using a combination of natural language processing, machine learning, visualization, data portraiture, social network analysis, and medium design.

Change Proposal for ISSUE-140 - WHATWG Wiki

by night.kame

The HTML spec has jurisdiction only because people choose to apply it to their documents. If people choose to apply some other specification instead, or in combination, the HTML spec can't stop them. If an entirely separate group completely redefines what “HTML” means and publishes that as a rival spec, what matters is not what either spec says is permissible to do with the term “HTML”, but which spec users of HTML choose to follow.

Traduction : les gens font ce qu'ils veulent, donc les standards sont inutiles, donc le WHAT WG est inutile.

Moleskine launching iPhone and iPad cases: how would Hemingway play Angry Birds? -- Engadget

by sbrothier
The way we saw it, it was Moleskine vs. the inevitable march of 1s and 0s that would eventually consume us all. No longer (actually, Moleskine already sells a Kindle cover, but we're temporarily ignoring that for argument's sake). Moleskine just announced a Digital Covers line of hybrid notebooks that include a pad of regular, "legendary" notebook paper alongside a cozy spot for your i-device of choice. Will this combination (some might say compromise) make you smarter, your prose more concise, your beard more intellectual? Of course it will. But at what cost? Sure, literature survived the decline of penmanship with the emergence of Mark Twain and his typewriter, and Douglas Adams championed the Macintosh to no end, but now that Moleskine has gone and sullied its own reputation we're finally ready to just go ahead and say it: the novel is dead.

SPARQL 1.1 Federation Extensions

by karlcow

The growing suite of SPARQL query services offer consumers an opportunity to merge data distributed across the web. A small number of extensions to SPARQL 1.1 enable expression of the merging queries. In particular, a SERVICE allows one to direct a portion of a query to a particular SPARQL query service, just as a GRAPH directs queries to particular named graphs. A BINDINGS keyword adds a compact syntax for tranfering results which constrain a query. The combination of these extensions allows one to compose a query which delegates parts of the query to a series of services. This specification defines the syntax and semantics of these extensions.

Without difficulty, Japanese people use a combination of four different types of character systems: kanji, hiragana, katakana, and the English alphabet. This is a very unusual system not seen in any other country in the world. Each of the kanji characters, forming the core of the Japanese writing system, usually serves also as a word. Elements of Japanese culture have been embedded in these kanji characters through their forms and images. In addition, most kanji characters have two or more pronunciations and a variety of meanings.

Curtis CSS Typeface · David DeSandro

by Krome & 1 other

CURTIS CSS TYPEFACE

Curtis is the name I’ve given for a family of geometric sans-serif fonts currently in development. Other incarnations exist as Fontstructions: Curtis Heavy and Curtis Pixel 14. This version takes form in CSS. All shapes are rendered by the browser, using a combination of background color, border width, border radius, and a heavily reliance on absolute/relative positioning. You can get a better idea of how the letters were formed with the Inspect display option.

PhotoSketch

by karlcow & 1 other

We present a system that composes a realistic picture from a simple freehand sketch annotated with text labels. The composed picture is generated by seamlessly stitching several photographs in agreement with the sketch and text labels; these are found by searching the Internet. Although online image search generates many inappropriate results, our system is able to automatically select suitable photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition. Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using the results from two user studies.
